I bought a domain name through a web hosting company and they registered it in their name and not mine. The thing is, is that I payed for the name. Shouldnt it be in my name and not theirs? What if they decide to charge me to make the registration info my own? It would be like buying something thats already mine? Can I sue? I appreciate any feedback ...
if you call them usually they will cahnge the administrative contact to your name. I seen some hosting company register under their name. just have them change admin contact, then set to private registration or something if you don't want name shown.
No I havent asked yet but ill be angry if they try to charge me for it. Say they do decide to.. Isnt that wrong?(If they charge me for it)
I doubt that they will charge you to change name though if taht's the case, all you need to do is that contact actual registrar(if they are reseller), if you have email copy of the domain registration request invoice for that domain, etc, you should be able to get the domain under your name by registar but it may take sometime.
If you bought a "free" name with hosting many hosts will keep it their name until your hosting contract is up.
that's a good point I wasn't thinking about that one. that'a definatly smoething check into how you bought the domain.
First of all, is it such a big deal? It doesn't really effect you in any way... You should contact your host to find out what they say.
RTFP. [Read The (insert your favorite F word here) Print] You can sue, but no guarantees you'll win. Unrealistic expectations tend to create avoidable problems like this one. Well, you asked for feedback. You got some.
It is a huge deal not to "own" your domain name. I worked with one guy for 5 months trying to get his domain from a developer. The developer purchased the domain and refused to hand it over. Domains are incredibly important assets.
