    Any page image has a special optional attribute known as "alternative text.” It is specified using the HTML «ALT» tag. This text will be displayed if the browser fails to download the image or if the browser image display is disabled. Search engines save the value of image ALT attributes when they parse (index) pages, but do not use it to rank search results.

    Currently, the Google search engine takes into account text in the ALT attributes of those images that are links to other pages. The ALT attributes of other images are ignored. There is no information regarding other search engines, but we can assume that the situation is similar. We consider that keywords can and should be used in ALT attributes, but this practice is not vital for seo purposes.

    you know so many seo are promoting there image as well and it is also a good way to increase your traffic here are so many way to promote ur image in SERPS

    1)Keywords in alt text, text around the image, image name, page title;
    2)Preferred image formatting - jpg;
    3)Separate SE accessible image folder;
    4)Image freshness. (SEW suggests re-uploading your images to keep them fresh);
    5)Enabled image search option at Google webmaster tool.
    6)Reasonable image file size (see the discussion at WW)
    7)Limited number of images per page;
    8)Popular and reliable photo sharing hosting (e.g. Flickr is reported to help in Yahoo! image optimization).

    I agree with you but, for not at all time it shows these results,
    Better to use text.

    If images are getting good results than why you think much more about Images,
    There should be some images on website but not too much.
    ALT tag will provide you one keyword through it,
    But you need to keep links only and only in Text.

    Great to see you all...but my question is still incompletted...when we search something...then "G" shows few images right...i am not talking about top most images...talking about top 10 results...having images in their results, Even as for as i am concerned, "G" not crawling images.
