Wasn't it stupidly expensive to register a name, reason why only a few were registered in the 80's?

Wait. The oldest registered domain is symbolics.com, right? And it is registered with NetworkSolutions since last 1985. And yet, NetworkSolutions was created last April 27, 1998. Can someone explain it to me?
