Getting backlinks?

Okay I know that you have to be weary of getting backlinks since they maybe using nofollow.

The nofollow tags do not encase my url on certain blogs but is there another way they could stop PR being given to my site?

    Thanks

Yes, nofollow in the robots meta tag, using robots.txt all together to block the web page or call the links via a javascript.

To be honest i wouldnt worry about no follow links. Yes they don't pass any link juice but they may pass you traffic.

The other ways to "hide" your link is the robots.txt file.

.....build my site and make it the best in the world and I think all my SEO problems will be solved.

If your product is not finished then no need to do too much marketing but when the product is ready and I have a 200 - 300 page site that will be a good starting point for people to filter in then I can start refining my marketing through SEO.

Product (website) should be fully complete first.

In any software dev cycle you never start of with SEO, in fact some companies who make millions only look at SEO afetr about 5 years to "polish" their product.

Pre-optimization of a website is the best choice, just most people don't get that option.

I think that it is a great idea to focus more on the product while you are developing it. However, I think that you should still put a small amount of effort, into building links in the mean time. Its much easier to get a large amount of links if you have a lot of time to get them, then to try to get them all in a short period of time.
Even if your product isn't finished yet, you can still create some landing/information pages for your site. These pages could advertise how great your new site will be (build hype for your site). Build links to these pages, and then you will already have some links ready for you when you launch your site.

I have noticed that when looking for back links and placing the keyword in the anchor text, the next day the website has shot up in the serps for that keyword. Now assuming they had no following switched off why has that backlink not boosted my SERPS? How long does it take to see the effects of backlink on your site??

....with nofollow, does the anchor text still count?

If that site that links to you is banned from Google, it may in fact have a negative effect on your own ranking. So, that is something else to be careful of.

Can someone please confirm whether or not when you have a nofollow backlink if the anchor text adds any value for your site?

    Thanks

No follow links have full value in all SE except Google and probably Msn.

Why not use article submission? Article directories do not use the nofollow.
