So the order goes, .com, .net, org...

and most would agree that the general order as it relates to popularity goes:
    .com
    .net
    then . org

Is there anyone knowledgable that wants to weigh in as to some situations that may make domain buyers gravitate towards one extension as opposed to another?

Or do buyers look at extensions in the same way, same order 1 2 3 no matter what website?

.com always, the .net is actually picking up some speed, .org does not have a ton of potential for commercial sites

Thanks for the reply. The main reason I asked is because I notice some big .org websites that either have the same name parked or free in .com and .net.

Something like, worldwildlifefoundation.org would be better suited as a .org than as a .com
Or an even better example would be something like:
    NIFCR.org for
    National Institue For Cancer Research
    would certainly be betetr than
    NIFCR.com

Optimally, the .org would own the .com also have have it redirect to the .org

From a commercial point of view .com is the best pick.

.com just seems to stand out due mostly to popularity. I'm thinking .net is something anyone under 20 would gravitate towards at first. Maybe it just sounds "cool"

Org is good for non-commercial sites only, such as international organizations, associations, cultural projects, charity etc.

I would say that the order is something like this
    .com
    .net
    .org
    .info
    .biz
    .us (country domain extensions)

There is a huge amount of domain zones, each of them having its own meaning, and it is important to choose the most appropriate one. There are Generic Domains and Country Code Domains. Among Generic Domains are: "com" - commercial project; "net" - network, related to WWW; "org" - organization; "biz" - business project; "info" - informational project; "TV" - television channel; and many others. Country Code Domains are domains that reveal ownership of a particular domain (website) by a country. Each country (including those that don't already exist) has its own domain zone. For example "us" means USA site; "de" is German; "co.uk" stands for Great Britain","ru" refers to Russia; "fr" denotes France. So, what domain zone would give the best fit for Your domain? If Your Internet project is going to have regional restrictions (for example e-shop meant for sale in USA only) - do not hesitate to choose the domain zone of Your region. If Your project isn't attached to a particular country, You will have to choose from the "Great Five" of domain zones: com/net/org/biz/info. These zones are the most valuable and popular in the Internet. "Com" is one of the best, being a universal domain zone. "Net" matches with IT forums and sites related to domain names. "Org" suits perfectly to web directories. Almost all of the best great directories have domains in "org" zone (dmoz.org; lii.org; vlib.org; botw.org). "Biz"- will be a brilliant solution for e-shops and projects that have to do with online sale. "Info" is right for blogs and personal pages. But You don't have to be consistent with these meanings - they are conventional. Though, there are domains which You can't purchase without having a competent authority: "gov" - government establishment; "mil" - military department; "edu" - educational establishment; "int" - international organization; "museum" - museums and so on...

Quotation from my article, dedicated to domain names.

    for commercial purposes .com

but sometimes i prefer .co.uk (or the country tld if it is famous in the country which the company is in) if it got something to do with uk and redirect .com to the .co.uk address

I've always liked .net much more than .com. For me .net looks better and is more fitting to anything on the internet.

.com meaning commercial just doesn't sound right, and really isn't fitting. i'm unsure how it got to be the top domain, but i seriously don't like it.

I am actually changing all my sites to .net's and directing the .com's to them.

I think .Net's will be getting more and more popular over the next few years.

The main forum i goto is very popular and it's a .net :p

But what about .biz? I guess it can also be used for commercial use, though not as good as .com TLD.

I wasn't referring to the distribution order as to which are the most used domains but more or less to the authority order of domain names.

I think we exceeded the original plan of website categorization with their TLD
Now it's about the type in capability, surfer TLD awareness and many more....
Good or bad the value of the TLD comes from its usage and the adaption of this TLD from big trusted worldwide firms
In any case i don't argue with the rest of the people regarding .org is better for a non commercial entity but .com must be registered even if you have .org as the main site
