Christopher Hitchens - God is not Great

The book is obviously old news but I just finished reading it and was surprisingly impressed. Hitchens leaves a lot to be desired as a speaker/interviewee but the book was wonderfully written, straight to the point and thoroughly enjoyable. It's good to see religions exposed in bestseller fashion; the number of religious-minded people who read this book must be astronomical.

He also took a good run at Islam despite the potential for violent backlash and I thought this was commendable. Christianity is a horrible doctrine but Islam is no less so and it's only fair to see each get its due.

Any thoughts or opinions on the book or Hitchens himself?

Hitchens is a piece of garbage IMO.

He's a neoconservative war monger bigot, who hides behind literary pretense to parade his tyrannical ambitions and homoerotic obsession with the power elite.

If I had to pick one person to be sacrificed to save the human race, he would be on my short list. I don't think he provides any value to the species.

62 words, that work for ya?

I have to be honest: as much as I enjoyed the book I can understand why he hasn't many fans :D I think the value of the book is great, especially to the many "casual Christians" of the world.

Hitchins is a lunatic. He's a smart man, but he is about as crazy as they get.

If you want a great 2 hours viewing, watch the lunatic get ripped apart by British MP George Galloway.

Alright, I committed a ton of time to the debate (MP3 format in the MP3 player - sweet!) and I have to say, he doesn't sound all that crazy to me. I disagree with him on many political points but the path he takes makes quite a lot of sense to me; we simply differ in opinion on what to do now.

Currently listening to a great debate between he and a couple of theologians with doctorates - interested stuff! I'll upload them later and post a link in this thread.

Hitchens believes that 9/11 changed everything

As Galloway tells him, he should grab a rifle and tin hat, and go fight instead of cheering on others to their deaths.

Hitchens is a gutless coward like most neoconservatives.

Absolutely spot-on guerilla. I'd love to see him get off his fat arse and go and fight for the BS "war" he believes in.

I don't agree with Hitchens views on the war, But saying "grab a rifle and tin hat, and go fight" to an overweight 50 year old is pretty silly.

An overweight 50 year old telling the next generation of 20 year olds to "grab a rifle and tin hat" to fight his war seems pretty silly to me.

But that's the way it always is, isn't it?

Old men send young men to die for their unfulfilled desires.

He is a citizen and tax payer, He has every right to have an opinion on where the people who chose to join the army should be sent regardless if he is eligible for service himself. Feel free to argue against him on the merits of his case, But to say he isn't allowed an opinion simply because he isn't over there himself is facile and weak.

Where did I say he was not allowed an opinion?

I have no problem with him having an opinion. My opinion is that he is an @sshole.

You said; "he should grab a rifle and tin hat, and go fight instead of cheering on others to their deaths." which i take to mean that he shouldn't show support for the war and instead pick up a gun and fight. You know "instead" means alternatively, Right?

Either way, You aren't addressing his case on it's merits and rely solely on calling him an asshole and making the facile point that he, A 50 year old fat man, Should sign up for the military.

I'm glad that you acknowledged how "obvious" it is that you are making facile points. That backwater edumacation sure turns out some people who don't think to read what they are quoting before replying to it......

I make lots of facile points every time I argue with you. In fact, one could argue that in order to discuss with someone as fallacious , felonious and facetious as yourself might require it!

you are right, sorry for expecting you to argue against a case on it's merits. It was unreasonable of me to expect that level of integrity from you. You stick to calling him an asshole and saying a fat 50 year old who supports the war should fight in it.
