Muslims More Numerous Than Catholics

VATICAN CITY - Islam has surpassed Roman Catholicism as the world's largest religion, the Vatican newspaper said Sunday.

"For the first time in history, we are no longer at the top: Muslims have overtaken us," Monsignor Vittorio Formenti said in an interview with the Vatican newspaper L'Osservatore Romano. Formenti compiles the Vatican's yearbook.

He said that Catholics accounted for 17.4 percent of the world population -- a stable percentage -- while Muslims were at 19.2 percent.

"It is true that while Muslim families, as is well known, continue to make a lot of children, Christian ones on the contrary tend to have fewer and fewer," the monsignor said.

    IS IT TRUE ?

It is already reported in a lot of newspapers, Muslims tend to have bigger families, not surprising that they would overtake Catholics as the largest religion.

As with most population trends, the society have lesser babies as their economy improves and develops, same as Europe and Japan. I guess the population will peak and then drop as per normal. Now Japan and Europe are encouraging more babies because of the demographic changes.

Yep, I studied this way back.

Fascinating concept. Anyway, there are tons of Christians, if you take the religion as a whole. I mean, you could say there are more Catholics than Shiite Muslims. There's not a big advantage here though of Muslims having more numbers. Many Muslims have a terrible quality of life, due to them living in developing countries or their jackass governments spending their money on turbans and weaponry when they could be providing social services.

True, I find this very notion of this thread to be bogus personally.

To find true numbers you'd need to compare all muslims to all christians, not all muslims to only one part of the christian religion.

Good point, Grim. Also, Islam tends to claim as its numbers anyone under Islamic control. I meet plenty of Persians, Jordanians, etc but none of them stop in the middle of day to do works their system requires, they don't dress like they did in the homeland, they don't go to mosque, and I ask them and they say they knew very few people back home that truly embraced Mohammed's system. Like many things in life I take the reported number and divide by ten.

You could probably make a similar argument for Catholicism.

Besides, more Muslims than Catholics is no big deal. When they hit 50% +1 of the global population, then it will be too late to Rock the Casbah.

Many, many of those that grew up Catholic end up becoming Christians, some stay as part of Charismatic Catholics, but most end up at Bible centric Christian churches.

Remember when we hit a reported 50%, we only hit a real 5% per the tbarr60 algorithm.
