    Trillion is probably the best but there is also pidgen messenger which also allows you to connect to irc channels.

    I am using Pidgin and I think its the best so far as desktop solution.
    There are some online IM like meebo.com,ebuddy.com etc.. they give IMs which support the major protocols.
