When you buy on Ebay or elsewhere and has been paid through paypal, and sent WITHOUT tracking number, you can ecalade on Paypal and get the item and money back. Good deal...

Well that's a common 'scam' people use all the time with any electronic type payment system, pay pal or credit card. That's why it's up to the merchant to make sure they have tracking.

It's much harder for the 'scam' to take place with Pay Pal however as all you need is a tracking number, with many credit cards even having a signature is not enough. ;)

I've never shipped anything that I sold on eBay without getting at least delivery confirmation with signature. If it comes down to it, I can prove that the item was delivered to the address given at payment.

With electronic transaction which does not come with a signature, physical inspection of the credit card, the customer is always protected. Fraud can happen on both ends anyways, from the merchant and from the customer. When dealing with online transaction, you will need to ship with proof of delivery and best if you have online tracking otherwise there would be no shred of proof to states that the seller actually ship anything. So in which case, who would Paypal or the bank believes since they are not there physically when the transaction occurs.

However, the good thing is that most people are honest and you can only rely on that honesty when shipping electronically or without proof of delivery.

That's pretty much the sad reality.

Of course if you get caught your name will get blacklisted and you'll hear about it the next time you try to get a bank loan

All of my products are virtual - out of about 1000 sales I have had about 15 requests for refunds. I know that some people are scamming me but it just goes with the territory. I usually just refund and move on. Thankfully, like eddy2099 said, most people are honest. I like to think, "what goes around comes around"

That's the tax of dealing with digital products.

Even If you want to use tracking. some items are low in price that tracking cost will eat the profits of selling that item.

To make it clear, it was not a digital product...
It was an iPod HD sold to UK where USPS track # are not privided and where UPS track # will cost 3 times the HD price itself.
I thing is for sure. Next time I buy something on ebay and sent without tracking number, I'll ask refund to Paypal...So I can enjoy the item AND my money back...

but there is one more thing... even if you provide proof to paypal with all that tracking number, paypal cannot stop a chargeback.... so if someone use a stolen CC then they get the item and after 2 months you lost the money and the iteam... there are time when i lost money even after a year just because of chargeback... so chargeback is the worse nightmare for online merchants....

I don't want to be a thief...I want to get my money back...

And regarding the CC chargeback, no need to steal a CC, the 4 laptops I sold so far, 3 made a chargeback with they own CC. Their banks do not want to lose their customers so there is nothing I could do...

Well these kind of frauds can be reduced by using some best ecommerce practices like:

    1. Having proofs of delivery
    2. Make sure you encourage payments from verified paypal buyers. (Most of the frauds occurs from unverified paypal users).
    3. You could manually approve orders from high risk countries.
    4. Log transaction details including the IP and the system Info
    5. For electronic products, log the IP from which the customer has downloaded the electronic file.

These steps will help you reduce less money from fraudsters! ;)

I agree. It happens in 32% of my buyers so far...Once they get their item, they file a claim with Paypal...

I'm open to any other ideas, except stop selling online...
