I've been getting several issues with my web host (shared hosting) and they're telling me how much my site/email traffic is affecting their servers. So, I've been thinking on getting a dedicated server. But I really don't need an expensive one since my site only gets around 500 uniques per day. Questions: 1. With sites getting 500 - 1k uniques per day, do I really need a Dedicated Server? 2. If I do get a dedicated server, could you please suggest a good provider. One factor is of course the price. I'm looking at below the $100 range, I don't need a big server since my sites are not that big (No warez/torrent/pron sites). Also, the support is a big factor. 3. For those that do know, what may be the reasons that I'm getting a lot of email traffic? They're kicking me out of my hosting because of the email traffic. I've removed all the cronjobs I made. But still there are big traffic from my sites. I don't know where it's coming from. Do you guys have an idea? Advance thanks to your enlightenments. Do know that I'll give some greens for your help. Thanks a lot!
Answers: 1 - No you don't 2 - ? Sorry, can't help you on this one 3 - Email Spam on your server/sites without your knowledge, maybe?
I hear 1and1.com is good, seems to have a realy good price and I have a friend that hosted there that likes it, I myself wouldn't know from experience though.
No you do not need a dedicated server, Get rid of your catch all email. That will stop alot of the email server load issues, the emails that can not be delivered to your address will fail instead of going into your catch all (spam)
More needs to be known than amount of visitors a day, what types of sites are you serving? Static, mysql based, forums, etc. Do these visitors stay on your site for hours, or leave automatically? A good host should be able to tell you where the emails are coming from. Could be something ON THEIR end allowing your domain to be used for spam, could also be something on your end. They could also simply be crap and blowing smoke up your ass, very common for hosting companies to do. Blame all speed issues on the customer as they know 99% of customers do not have enough knowledge to dispute it, even those who do don't have access to the server to see what the true problem is. Blackholing your main account email as suggested by IwhiC is a good start
Thanks a lot for the helpful reply GRIM. Most of my sites are mysql based and I also have a few forums. This may be the reason for the server load. I will try to talk with them to see where the server load is coming from. Thanks a lot for the advice guys. @IwhiC - Thanks for the tip. But anyway, do you have an idea where most catch emails are? I have a phpbb forum and also an SMF forum. But I'm not that technical when it comes to those stuffs. Maybe you could push me in the right direction for me to see what I could remove. @kc3 - Thanks man. I'll consider that if ever i try to switch hosts. But due to your responses, I guess I won't need a dedicated server after all. To all of you guys: Thanks again! I really appreciate the help. Gave you some greens for your valuable time.
Hi, like Grim said with out seeing what your account is doing, then it is hard for us to tell you what is wrong. Your host (if a good one) should be able to tell you where the high load is comming from, if it is just emails then it could be on his end with the server configeration. You can start by going into your cpanel account and down in the mail secton there will be a icon that says defult addresses, click on that and then choose your doamin name and make the settings like this. Default Address Maintenance Send all unrouted e-mail for: c50.info Current Setting: :fail: No such person at this address Forward to email address Forward to email address Discard with error to sender (at SMTP time) Failure Message (seen by sender): Advanced Options » click on the box that says discard.. This will stop all the spam mail coming into your email account that is not associated with your email account.. For example you have an email account that is but spammers don't know what your actual email account is so they send email to anything and everything to , sales, support. and so one, those emails will fail before they get to your domain and not cause your email to get overflowed with mail causing the mail server on the server to work harder. his server could also be overloaded there are many possibilities But if he is saying it is a mail issue then he needs to be more specific with you.. Are you sending out bulk mail to your forum members? or has a spammer gotten into your php mailer and sending out spam.. If you can get more information form your host then we may be able to help you a little better. Thank you Aimee
I was told similar when my online game was running high on resources. I use semi dedicated hosting. Its a compromise. $60 a month from www.downtownhost.com
