Page Rank has nothing to do with your actual traffic. When people say "it is about how popular website is". They are referring to other websites linking to yours. Google's algorithm thinks that if a lot of websites are talking about yours, that you must have a pretty important website. Therefore, your page rank will go up. The key is that the higher the PR site linking to you the more "link juice" its links have. Therefore, you can potentially reach a PR3 by just having one or two PR6 pages linking to you. Granted, PR really means nothing outside of being able to sell text links on your own website for a bit more than you would with a PR0. Also, purchasing links can be risky and sometimes Google will penalize you if they actually find you trying to abuse the system by purchasing several links. Spread the love, perform link building naturally.
The best way to increase your PR is to get high quality links to your website. This way Google and the likes know how well to rank your site. If its popular then you will get a better rank!

I've been doing link exchanges, promoting my site where appropriate, and spending money on google adwords for some decent traffic, but I don't know where to find these 'directories' (although I've heard lots of people talk about them). Thanks in advance - I just joined this forum and it seems like a helpful place to be.
actually, that would be the last thing to do. google is coming down hard on directories and no one knows the future of directory submissions. i'm not saying don;t submit to directories, but that would be to complement your existng link building campaign. when you say increase ranking, i suppose you mean SERP and not PR. build a site with quality content, get backlinks from relavant sites, post on dofollow blogs, submit to SB site with dofollow, and keep adding more unique content. it will take time but you will get there
If you are focusing on just this unreliable, overrated seo, brother, you need more help than you think. If you want to increase your PR, exchange links with other similiar sites, and that has at least a PR of 3, and, stay away from link farms. That is the only true way. And good luck. ... You'll need it.
Article writing and submitting them to article directories is one of the best ways to get back links. This helps in getting more traffic to your site and get your name recognized. Also posting articles on your site with good quality information. Also post good info to related blogs in your niche. There are a lot of great ways to get traffic and get your PR up. Take care! Scott
Getting links are the only way. Especially from Do-Follow sites. I got lots of links and my PR for my site is PR2! (My hoster didn't do any SEO with his site.)
Well, MAny answers should carify most of great ideas. PR is not that important anymore, but site qualit is more important
One method to increase backlinks is to comment on blogs that do not use the "no-follow tag" (such as the one in my signature )
