I have a DVD (not a copywrited DVD, more of a home movie type of thing) and I want to put some clips of it on YouTube. How do I do it? How do I get the video from the DVD to my computer and then how do I chop it down to just the parts that I want to advertise?

You need to convert the DVD to a WMV, AVI, MOV, or MPG file which you could then upload to Youtube.
I would use NeroVision Express to do the converting but I presume you are looking for something free..

Sony Vegas is probably the best option (its not free btw). Some people use Windows movie maker though

I've used WMM before. Does that convert the file or is that just for editing once it's converted?

I just downloaded and tried Movie2x free DVD Ripper v2.5

Its freeware but you have to register it after 30 days. Its pretty basic. It will convert the whole DVD or just the chapters you choose into various formats. got to be worth a go anyway..

You're going to need a dvd ripper. Most of them you have to pay for. However, some of them offer free trials of say 10 or 30 minutes. I don't know how long your DVD is.

A ripper basically turns the DVD (VOB) file into a format that an editor can read (MPG, AVI, or WMV). I don't have any experience with free rippers so I can't really recommend one. Your best bet would be to either use a trial one or search for a "freeware dvd ripper".

You can then pull the converted file into Windows Movie Maker, chop them up anyway you want and export to youtube.

Here's a video that talks about the best settings for using WMM and youtube.
