Close Music Television (MTV) made its debut on August 1, 1981, becoming available to 2.1 million cable television subscribers in the United States. The unique format of showing music twenty-four hours a day was an instantly appealing development in television. Although the notion of pairing music and video was not new, the idea of airing music videos every hour of the day and night was unique. I feel real old...lol I was 16 when it came out I remember one of the first couple of VJ's a guy with curly hair named mark or something and a black guy named jackson. The original five MTV VJs in 1981 were Nina Blackwood, Mark Goodman, Alan Hunter, J. J. Jackson and Martha Quinn. Here is a video showcase dedicated to these pioneers! Just found this article too. http://www.mtv.com/news/articles/1485838/20040318/index.jhtml?headlines=true Check this out to the first video played on MTV http://www.squidoo.com/MtvOriginalVJvideoshowcase
