I hope this is the right place to post this.

I already know ASP and want to learn either ASP.net or PHP.
Which has a better scope in terms of freelance work ??

    Thanks

depends on your customers. most cust have shared hosting on linux machines. asp.net not working there. if you want to target bigger customers they will have no problem with buying a more expensive windwos hosting.
competition on php is bigger i think. if you are good in ASP you will be good in ASP.NET faster than be good in PHP. world does not need another php-noob ;)

What is your end game? If your target is making alterations to peoples existing small sites then with php there will be more potential jobs but also more people going after them. If you are looking at the M end of SME or above then ASP.Net is going to get more work and less people going after them.

The other potential advantage of .Net is the fact that you can move over to small desktop applications with minimal effort as the framework works for both (though you really do need Visual Studio rather than the Express versions for anything you intend to sell for desktop apps where as you can get away with Express for web apps assuming you dont mind the fact that the first user after an application restart will have a slow response time - depending on your host restarts may be fairly frequent as some shared hosts have very short time limits before the app is stopped to free memory for the server).

We develop 95% in .Net and 5% in JSP - due to other reasons we no longer offer PHP

    Thanks for the advice!
The lure of becoming a freelance and hopefully a enterpreuneur attracts me to PHP but the haggling and crowd for that kind of work makes me think in the .NET direction.

There is plenty of .Net work out there but it all depends what you are wanting to go after. You will get very little on sites like this because it is very much tiny budget, many are using a mixture of free PHP scripts and just want small alterations or new opensource free scripts installed.

On the other hand we dont want those sorts of projects as their effective hourly rate when you consider all the other elements not just pure coding time (discussing proposal, invoicing, chasing payment, accountancy etc). Again it depends if you are looking at low value, high turn over or larger higher paying contracts.
