Missing space of hard drive

    Hello,

My drive C: is 20gig, but actually I found that almost 10gig are missing.
I found the folder C:/install, and deleted everything there, but I still see the over 6 gig are missing.

I've formatted my pc several times.

Where can be this data, and how can I see what is there and to use it again?

    Thanks.

    win xp

    when I check properties on c: i see total size: 19.50 G, Free:1.60

When I enter c: and click see properties on all things that are in (including hidden files, windows and everything else), I see Size 5.78 G.

Is it possible that to be data before format, or what else?

    Thank obviously isn't normal.Over 10 G are missing

make sure that you really also see system files! in c: there must be a folder "system volume information". if not there you do not see system files! size of svi can not be determined bc users have no right to access. you can change that but it is not recommanded to do!

download "sequoiaview" and run. great tool to visualize what eats up space!
    EDIT: www.win.tue.nl/sequoiaview

"Windows Tooth Fairy." What is this?

"it might be because of bad sector in your hard drive" I don't think the hard drive is new and I haven't bad sectors on drive e: at all.

Have you tried Disk Defragmenter

The Disk Defragmenter Utility is designed to reorganize noncontiguous files into contiguous files and optimize their placement on the hard drive.

    DON.

does not change the needed space!

one thing to burn space is to have many many 1 byte files. bc each file will ned at least one cluster indepent of filesize.
cehck any file proprtey and you find "size" and "size on disk". how much is used up depends on cluster size. if cluster is 4k, any file or file fragment will take min 4k. so have 100k of 1 byte files and your drive needs 400MB to store them but all files together is only 100kB

go to folder options and disable hide of pretected system files!

download sequoiaview and see what takes most memory!

if you want to install apps, you can install on e:
if you dont want on e: create a folder on c: and map e: to this folder.

    Thanks for that mythbuster08

I checked "hide of protected system files", but than I saw only +3G.

I downloaded sequoiaview, and I found:c:/pagefiles.sys = 18G.I've tried to open it but it can't open it.

What is this file, what is in it and what can I do?

u can decrease the swap file size. 18gig is too much. On XP its in control panel>system>advanced>performance>advanced>virtual memory. It should be on "system manage size", but change it to a more manageable size if its causing u problems.

Also if u have 2 seperate hard drives set it so virtual memory is on a seperate drive from the drive u boot from. Will speed up things, as sytem files and pagefile are accessed at the same time.

    http://www.petri.co.il/pagefile_optimization.htm :
I have 1,2G RAM, but pagefile is 18G???

I see this in registry C:\pagefile.sys 1908 3816, which mean it is OK.

    About sequaview:

( I'm on c: )One ot the parts that appear to be empty, when I go over it I see C/pagefiles.sys 1.86G, but at the bottom right I see file: 1.86G dir:18G ???
I don't see anything else in this directory.

I unchecked "hide of protected system files" and I can see pagefile in c: but it shows 1.86G(not 18)

Here is a problem. What to do?
