As much as I think PR should not be over-hyped or people over-concerned about it, if you were given a choice between getting a PR3 link and getting a PR8 link (and NO other information is available), which would you take? I have a hard time believing anybody would say it truly truly TRULY does not matter which one you take, they're both equal.
I don't think that is a very good example. How about if you have a choice between a spammy pr4 auto blog and a nice original pr2 blog? Also JamieG your 'shoving' that blog post down our throats in every thread is getting very annoying.
I've pointed to it three times if I'm right and not with the intention of annoying anyone jg. Mind you I did notice that anything near the truth tends to piss people off here.
Depends on what I'm looking for. But it IS a good example. Just like in experiments and trials, you strip out all other variables except the one you're testing. Your example pollutes the 'experiment' by introducing other variables. ALL ELSE BEING EQUAL, is there ANYONE who would say a PR8 is not better than a PR3? or even a PR6 not better than a PR4? Edit: I'll get around to reading it, I haven't had the time just yet. BTW, itsn't that your blog???
I guess you are right about it being better with all things being equal but I don't think that is realistic so I had chosen something I see happen quite often. JamieG I don't mind a bit of self-promotion and partake in it myself but you started two threads about it and you have mentioned it in other threads at least 3 more times. It is coming close to spam and although the post is ok (I skimmed most of it because it was a bit long) you are certainly not re-inventing the wheel with it. I have already received 3 green rep for making the statement so I am guessing others agree.
Yeah i think its more important for the purpose of submission.A new site with no/negligible pr will certainly gain some,if submitted to a dir with good pr. But the main problem is,some sites out there have a good front page rank, but they drop to pr0 for rest of their pages. So better look out for that (if you are doing submission only for a good pr )
I certainly don't deny that there are a multitude of other factors that go into the worth of a link/site. Many of those factors, individually or in aggregate, may/will outweigh page rank. Therefore, if you are basing decisions solely on page rank, then you're probably making a mistake (in your example, for instance). But I have trouble believing the people that say it means nothing. It may be one of the least determining factors for the quality of a link, but I believe it is a factor nonetheless (Google even says so). I even think that the higher the PR is, the more relative weight the link may have. For example, if I could pick between 2 links, one is a PR8 with bad anchor text and little relevance, or a PR2 link with great anchor text and great relevance, I would probably take the PR8. The other factors (anchor text, relevance, etc) begin to take over as the difference in PRs decreases. My $.02...
It has nothing to do with self promotion, it has everything to do with how PR affects the behaviour patterns of people. Haven't you ever thought that there was a reason behind my posting about it more than once. There's a follow up blog coming which will demonstrate exactly what I mean by how people are in at least one of the modes mentioned in that blog. As for it being a bit long, perhaps, but so is the bible.
