When is News copyright? Can various news articles, publications etc be used as a free source to gain information and facts that are then reworded around the facts only and republished as part of a user pays information service without infringing copyright? Copyright sources reveal “there is no copyright on facts or ideas, you only own the "expression" of an article, ie the way it is written.†“Copyright does not protect ideas, information, styles or techniques.†Also, does anyone have any examples of this?
If you look at most news websites, they do not copyright there news content. however they do request in the TOS that the authors name in respect is published also. afaik, no copyright for news unless the news site copyrights there " own content " Technically, I could see news articles becoming copyrighted and im sure there are already a few news sites which do publish there content as copyright... however who is going to say that you can't rewrite the news article and your a publisher?
You are 100% wrong. Every news article written, at least in the United States, is automatically copyrighted. You need permission from the copyright holder to reprint the article.
This guy is correct. News articles are creative works that are permanently expressed in a tangible medium (words on a page). Bingo--copyright is created. Before I address the first poster, I have to say something. Folks should be more careful when responding to questions here. Giving wrong information isn't helping anyone. Browntwn is right...the 2nd poster was 100% wrong. News events are not protectible copyrights--only the expression of a description of those events in a tangible medium is protectible. And no, the fact that someone writes an article about something does not create a "copyright shield" around that event so that no one else can write about it. So, if CNN writes "Borack Obama visited 8 states today and continued his pursuit of the democratic nomination by challenging his opponents on the iraq war, health care, and the economy," you could safely reinterpret that report by saying: "Borack Obama (no copyright infringement, he's only got one name!) toured 8 midwestern states today and buttressed his candidacy by attacking Ms. Clinton and Mr. McCain on several key fronts: health care, the iraq war, and the economy."
