I've been running wordpress on my site for nearly a year, and the premium themes and everything are great, but I've outgrown it. I've been searching for days to find answers about moving from wordpress to joomla, and I can't find anything, so I'm strating to think that it is impossible. Well, not impossible, but not exactly easy. Is there anyway to do this seamlessly? Is it possible to have everything appear the same way that it is, as in terms of permalinks? I don't want to lose all my backlinks and everything, but at this point I'd settle for a simple way to just get the stuff there. Can anyone help?
google something like: migrating wordpress to joomla and if you want even further filetered results include the versions. i found this after googling: http://www.connectedinternet.co.uk/2007/11/06/migrating-from-wordpress-to-joomla-part-1/ from a programming point of view i wouldn't see it too difficult. the permalinks might be the biggest challenge but i'm sure it can be done
Just curious to know the main reason behind your decision...??? Can you please elaborate if WordPress is causing any problems for your traffic ? I don't ask for your URL, but it would be nice if you can share your 'page views per day' and any specific problems with WordPress. I am asking specifically because I considered WordPress for a large website and then dropped the idea with the feeling that it 'may' give performance problems in future if my traffic grows. I always had the feeling that WordPress is only for small - medium size websites. I don't have a solution, but I have a strong feeling that it will be very hard to get same URL structure with Joomla. Also be aware that Joomla is NOT as known for SEO as WordPress. So unless you feel extreme need for migration, better not to migrate.
sounds like something that will have to be done by a freelancer who specializes in databases. I don't know why you'd want to downgrade by going from Wordpress to Joomla though...
I don't see it as a downgrade, aesthetically speaking the themes are much more professional looking, and you have a lot more control over what's going on. Even the premium themes still scream blog, I'm looking to seperate myself from that pack. In my opinion, Wordpress is fine, it got me to a certain point, and now it's time to move on to something more powerful.
It's not causing problems for my traffic, right now I'm running the Revolution Media Theme, and it's great, but right now I'm working on moving into the Rocket Theme's Media Mogul theme. It's just cleaner and more professional, it has more power, and it allows me to expand more. Options, Options, Options. Even if I don't use them all, I'd like to have them. See, in my opinion, Wordpress is a great blogging platform, and the CMS-ish themes are also very nice, but they can only go so far. These designers are trying to push Wordpress to Joomla, so why not just skip it, and go to the CMS platform. The traffic question, I get about 40,000 page views a day, but I should tell you that my numbers are horrible skewed. I do work for USA Today and Reuters, so when my articles are on those sites, my numbers soar, when i'm not they go back to normal. I agree with this, if I would have known what I was doing when I got started, then I wuold have started with a CMS, and not a blogging platform taht can do CMSish stuff.
Are you on a dedicated server or just a shared server ? I can understand. When I started, I started with just a forum - where I should have started with good CMS.
Joomla is more professional looking?? I greatly disagree...like a thousand times over. Not only that, their URL structures are awful. Maybe fine for 1997 but not today, where page titles and URLs should be identical. Revolutiontheme.com and Premiumnewstheme.com both blow away anything I've ever seen a Joomla theme do...
I got all the revolution themes, and while i love them, I've seen some much better stuff at Rockettheme.com... I'm not going to argue about the url structure, which is ridiculous, but aesthetically, there is no comparison between the best Joomla theme and the best wordpress theme. No matter what you do, you can't hide the bloggishness of a wordpress theme, no matter how great
you can make joomla titles and url's just as clean and nice as wordpress by installing the proper component..
can you help me out with that? I've downloaded some components, and tried to put some patches in, but things aren't working as they should. I've seen joomla sites with normal URL's, so I'm thinking if I name my categories the same way, I can slowly, but surely import all of my content and keep my permalinks intact.
Try sh404SEF, it's a great component and free, you can download from h*tp://extensions.siliana.com , it has documentation and support forum too
yes sh404SEF is really good component, and if u add some other mods joomla will be with really good seo can u let us how many pages u want to move ?
Joomla MojoBlog is great and can operate from the main page. With the extra tweaks, you can use WordPress plugins and Joomla mambots simultaneously. Joomla components help too and I surround my blog with custom modules for a blog-style look. ArtioSEF works with Mojoblog. I'm buying a blogging template next week for my site. I already have forums, website shop, member functions with special extensions, etc. I pretty much designed it to murder WordPress competitors in the search engines. Now I have to officially launch it with a sweet template and advertising campaign. I'm not sure how to go about transferring a WordPress site though. It could be as simple as importing your archive files but I wouldn't try anything without backing your files up or trying it out with a test site. The JBlog component is coming out soon for Joomla 1.5. MyBlog is a bit limited but does the basics and can work with JoomComment.
