LOL. That's a can of worms that has been debated to death on this and other forums. At it's most basic level, SEO is all about links. The more links you have pointing to your site and the higher the quality of those links, the higher your site ranks on search engines.
it works by making sure that search engines know that your site exists, and by making sure they know what your site is about.
SEO in my definition has two parts. Part 1: It is simply an art of formatting your website so that search engines will be more likely to understand what your website is about. Part 2: It involves a variety of techniques in advertising your website in a certain manner so that your website is linked algorthimically to keywords and/or keyphrases that pertain to your website.

As Egol from SEO Chat says, free advice is not worth much, but cheap advice is even worst. Please, before you say anything, count to 10. You didn't helped this guy at all. On the topic. SEO can be summarized into three major groups. 1: Guidelines related to the code (HTML, XML, PHP, etc.) 2: Guidelines related to linking: both to and from the website 3: Guidelines regarding the content of the website. The second one, you just learned it from the above guy. It's about getting links to your site, which means in other words that your site is popular. The more, the better. The better the sites that link to you are, then its even better than better. The third one, is content related, more or less its the most important in the new times of SEO. The old times were code and links, the future is in the content. Its actually how your write your content. The major search engines are going semantic, they have artificial intelligent and "think". The optimization for the content based on this is called Latent Semantic Optimization or LSO. The search engine basically rank one sites better, and other worst based on the revelency of the site's content with the perfect content for this topic. This perfect content is called ContentDNA and the search engines are using pure mathematics to extract the perfect content from the internet and then compare how much ContentDNA your site contains. The number should be arround 20-30%. The first one, is how are you writing the code of the site. Is it w3c valid, are you using flash and java script? How much are you using any of those. Are you doing any cloaking? Are you using bold and italic effects, are you using headings. Are your titles good and are they related to the content of the website? And many more. Good luck.
