New Type of Forum Spam?

    Hello

There has always been the old type of spam where people join and make spam posts and thread.

Well, I think a new type of spam was posted on my forum (www.computalk.net) today.

The user had made 0 posts, but their signature was filled with links for viagra etc.

I got suspicious when the homepage of the forum was displaying the users birthday for 5 days in a row. It turned out he was changing his birthday daily so his spammy profile was listed in the high ranking homepage all the time.

Ever had anything like this before?

Actually it is not really new type of forum spam. There is many ways to use signature in black seo purposes, i guess it is only modification. Not bad way to stay in top, huh.

Bahaha. thats genius! I give him major props although that takes some work to maintain. Check if its a bot or not - install a Captcha and see if he still logs in and changes his birthday. If he does, then there is not much you can do to combat manual spam - except try to ban his IP.

You should limit signatures to posters who have made xx good foum posts, instead of allowing them for users who have not made posts. Make them work for their links ;)

That's one form. Another way is they private message everyone. If someone does that type of shady behaviors its a quick perma ban.

Yeah, I know about PM spam, but I got someone to code something into vBulletin that uses Askimet to stop the PM spam. Also normally my members forward it to me or another mod very fast who can ban the member and delete the PMs.

    definitely not new.

I was facing the same problem and so I disabled signatures for everyone having less than 20 posts.

This is what I do too. Also, be sure to disable live links in posts for the same. These two tweaks alone can deter 90% of spammers (in my experience). :)

I keep getting spam from a chinese site that sells nike shoes. They are relentless, they think my site is about shoes since its ninjashoes, they probably cant understand english besides the word "shoes" so they keep spamming my ufc forum with SHOE ADS LOL.

Lol sounds funny. Sort of like my friend, he had a forum about skateboarding, specifically skateboarding shoes.

One day a bot, or mabye a human, signed up and posted van rental advertising posts in the "Vans Shoes" section :p
