TinyUrl's Alexa rank is 1380. The traffic is really huge. Even if 10% of the people click on the ads they'll make huge profits. If you post tinyurl.com/cloackednumber anywhere, most noobs will visit tinyurl.com just in curiosity that tinyurl is the main page for your url. Almost all those noobs will click on the ads!
Everytime you use TinyURL you are increasing the value of the domain name..... You are providing a backlink ) As I see it .. it is a massive linkbait!
This kind of website does not require any powerful servers, except if its very very massive as TinyURL. I suppose even if small amount of this massive amound of visitors click on the AdSense while they generate short URLs, they will still make huge profit. They also accept Amazon and PayPal donations.
Here is my two cent Wht if you think the redirected landing page is iframed, with the small Ad spot at the top, and the data at the bottom? Do you think the tinyURL user can accept?

Not exactly. It uses 301 redirect or something. Tinyurl.com has 580 Dmoz listings and 151 yahoo directory listings. (but there fake) this is becuase of the nature of the site. If anything it confusing search bots!
