I Place ads on the sides. Works best in between the body. I use colors that match the colors of my blog. Text ads generally perform the best. You can use video ads if you get high-traffic but poor CTR.

Best advice you can get is to not rely solely on Adsense. I can't even imagine how much money I lost out on my diversifying.

Ads should be placed on the top most level; of course with a little bit content over it. The visitors do not have the patience to go down deep to view / click your ads. The ad should perfectly blend with the contents; i.e. it should not stand out. The ad formats considered more fruitful are medium and large rectangles -Dairyman
You must try all sort of positions and colors, mostly in contrast with your background, not the same!
