Ever feel this way about business ideas?

Ever think of an idea for a website and then before you can get it off the ground , someone takes it (unintentionally) without you knowing and makes $$$$$$$$,$$$$$$ off of it. I thought about the format that digg is based on; discussing stories essentially. Low and behold, I come across digg. and now I can't do it. or can i? for a niche area?

please tell us your stories about your ideas and then seeing ideas become reality via the hands of someone else.... :(

sorry if this is the wrong forum. Advice would be great..haha

I think that you can always implement your idea in a way that no one done it. Even thought some one have already started the site that you have in mind, you can always do it your way and come out with something unique.

I think you can totally still do it. There are a few sites that do the exact same thing that facebook does and they are successfull. The main difference is that they are in different languages and have a few different options.
Find a niche (even if it is only perceived!) and fill it.
    good luck.

People always come up with ideas that have been created by someone or overlap with someone else's idea/project. And, of course, you can still do your project as long as you put your own flavor to it and make it look unique in the eyes of people even though there's another project with similar services.

The digg concept is nothing new, it's just got several old elements combined together .... still can be done of course.

And all the "just need to brand and get traffic / publicity" .... type posts : Derrrrrr what else can I say "doesn't take Einstein to figure that out ....

I heard that if you have an idea, there are eight people in the world with the same thought.

It's just one of those psychological, thought teleportation theories, so it probably has no merit to, but it seems to be true sometimes...

Oh yea. It's happened several times and I hated it because they were quite unique, potentially $$$$ ideas.

But hey, make something work better and people will come. I always take the Facebook Myspace example. Myspace was king (some may say it still is, im not getting into that whole debate here), but Facebook effectively took over the market by simply doing things better. By innovating and not following the crowd, Facebook became king over a seemingly immovable market that once belonged to Myspace.

I always look to that example in my head for inspiration when someone takes my idea or something. I think, I'll make the system better, and the poeple will come.

    :D

PS. In my recent and most inspired idea, I find that the people that beat me to it really did a crappy job. So start summer I will make a true system that will beat theirs. :D:D Let's see how it turns out.

People jack my ideas all the time but I can't blame them if I see something another site is using that is working I have to implement it, adapt or perish.

Outright stealing someones idea is messed up though.

I have great ideas and can't do anything about them because I'm not a programmer. I also don't trust telling freelancers since they'll probably run off with the idea :D

Before Yahoo got really big and started buying up all sorts of different arenas, I thought about doing a calendar and web email. Someone told me that was the stupidest idea they ever heard of, and no one in their right mind would want to look at their calendar and email on the web, so I dropped it. Then, a year later, Yahoo did it. Lol, I was so mad.

Sure it can be done but like most sites everyone worships it is a net loser in revenue so what exactly is the point? These guys get VC funding for millions of dollars and live off of it while they try to find a buyer for their website that can't get in the black. I wouldn't take Digg if you gave it to me and told me I was not allowed to sell it, only make an income from ads.

Can you expand on that? Does that mean Digg doesn't make net profit from ads? I would think it did.

If not I'm in for a surprise hehe

I had this idea for a site where people could share and download music files, but my room mate stole my software while I was sleeping. I am the Napster!
