Hello, I was wondering if someone can explain to me what difference is there in the different hosts I see. What is the difference between VPS, dedicated server or normal host? Isn't VPS operated the same way as normal shared hosting, using Cpanel? I tried searching wikipedia but this does not enlighten me much
vps is the same with dedicated server, but it's limited by memory and cpu. One physical dedicated server can be divided to multiple vps. Vps comes with root access, meanwhile shared hosting does not
Can you explain to me what would root access mean? Isn't it operated like Cpanel? And what about the memory and CPU? Does these exists in normal shared hosting?
I am a noob so my advice may not be quite right, but I think root access means you have REAL full access to the server, kinda like going into c:/ on your computer, you can goto the root of the drives on the server and change anything.
I'm a noob in VPS as well Then does this means that there is no Cpanel in a VPS? And can you give me a few examples of what is it that you can change?
cPanel is just a software for hosting management. You can have cPanel, even with shared hosting. When saying root access, you will have full permission with your vps. You can install your own script, or even delete the whole things
dedicated server - you own the whole box. you control the resources, the software, you can install extension and just about anything. problem with dedicated servers are if your not good in managing your server would likely need you to hire someone to manage it to keep those headaches at bay. so if its a managed dedicated server then that would be great, however your not only required to pay the monthly server fees but also the cpanel license as well. vps - virtual server that gives you root access, resources of the server is usually divided into four to six users, thus if its a 2gb ram for 4 users then 250mb ram would be allocated for you. there are also restrictions upon the usage of a vps server, if they think you are hogging the resources too much , you are prone to suspension. normal hosting (usually shared) - this is just accounts that are part of a server farm, you'll never know how much resources your using unless you are given a root access. certain shared accounts has shell access as well but it is a jailed type. as for the features, your cpanel is usually free compared to dedicated servers that needs you to pay a monthly license fee. these kind of servers are usually optimized for small to medium type sites , again bandwidth are more limited , space is big for some hosting companies but hidden rules are always hidden in their policies making your account prone to suspension again or likely canceling your account as well.
Thanks. That was pretty enlightening But still, which of these would you advise for a warez forum? Like I don't need a lot of space (1-2gb) but I need a lot of bandwidth (300GB) and has to be safe from hackers?
You could go with a shared plan if they offer that much bw but a vps would b more benifical to you so you do not get suspended for using to much resources.. I would recommend getting a managed vps as you do not have the experience in running a server.
Thanks for your opinion. [Rep+] Well I'm trying a shared hosting now. Perhaps I will learn more about VPS and managed VPS and perhaps migrate to one later on. Few other questions, does VPS has bandwidth? Or is it unlimited? And is managed VPS more expensive? By how much? - Sorry if I'm asking so much
Well it is going to depend some vps have unmetered bandwidth but for the most they have bandwidth limits. Vps management is usually a little more but again it is going to depend on what company you go through, and you want to be very care who you choose, Please read this thread that I started on what to look for in a host. http://forums.digitalpoint.com/showthread.php?t=762254
Well thanks for the quick reply. I have read your guide. Very good and I found out that There are 965 domains hosted on my host's IP!!
