Does anyone do that? Write a few comments on blog posts so it doesnt look deserted and start up other points for others to reply to?
I had that on my mind yesterday because my blog is only a few days old...then the post atop started getting comments. It's at 64 now, so I am glad I didn't.
I bet most bloggers do, even if they don't admit it. I've done it on occasion. (The key is to do it in moderation, writing 100 comments on each post of your new blog is a little obvious.)
I'd say it undermines your readership and is a waste of time. Why not comment on someone else who is small but slightly larger then you and hope for some comments in return. In the beginning you have to get yourself out there so others will find you and then begin networking. You can waste your time talking to yourself on your blog but I wouldn't recommend it.
Dubz makes a good point, but I think the occasional comment to start conversations might work. If nobody sees it though, there's no point - so get out there and talk to other people, it's a great way to get others coming back to talk to you
Fair point I'm new to blogging, whats some good places to search for blogs in my niche I can comment on? I found the Google blog search and that's ok.
I only comment on my own posts in reply to others. I always comment on other blogs to get links out there, make new friends and to bring traffic to my site. I comment on a minimum of 10 blogs a day, but I don't spam it with comments like "great post" or "great site". Read my posts "Grow Readership, Make Friends and Increase Your Traffic" or "7 Reasons to Comment That Creates Traffic" you might find something there that helps.
@whateverandever2: You can search Entrecard for active blogs within your niche, that's what I've largely been doing recently. I have never written comments to myself pretending to be a reader. I have posted comments on my blog to reply to other comments, or to say 'the next chapter in this saga is at this link', but it's always as me and not a pretend reader.
