Hello guys & gals, I am setting up a large auction website, and I need a powerful server. I am looking at a Godaddy dedicated server: Core 2 Duo 2.66 GHz Red Hat Enterprise (4 or 5) 1000GB Single 120 GB Drive 2GB RAM Simple Control Panel External Hardware Firewall 100GB FTP BACKUP 100MB/sec out. They will charge me about $230/Month for a server like this. Please give me your insights and thoughts about the server setup and price. Is this a really powerful server, or do I need something faster?
I would not put my business on a single disk. Raid-1 at least please It's a good one if the motherboard is good. Also it depends on your website. How large is it? How many members online at the same time? About the control panel, I have helped customer migrating data from a Simple control panel server, and it's confused me a bit. Paying a little more, you will get DirectAdmin, it's much better than Simple control panel. DO you need unmanaged or managed server?
Thanks for the comment, Well there will be about 200 active users online at any time. Unfortunately godaddy only allows me to get the "simple control panel" with Red Hat Enterprise (4 or 5). What is the difference between a managed and an unmanaged server?
I am not sure which script your are using for auction, but if 200 concurrent connections you might need a bigger server. Managed server means you don't need to worry about server management. Your vendor will take it care, update software, secure server etc to make sure it's running smoothly. Do you have any server management experience?
I see.. I personally have absolutely no experience in server management. I will use your advice and take a raid config. with dual drives. Do you suggest I get another vendor than godaddy, or do they stand up for the job?
In that case, you should go with managed server. Otherwise, you might face to trouble that leads to server downtime. Your members will crazy if problems happen when they are doing the auction We do provide managed server solutions, but need some more info. Have pm'ed you some questions.
that is expensive you can get is for 30% lower or even lower at versaweb.com (I have few rebates if you want) and betetr support than GD. GD's not famous for hosting, worstat dedicated hosting.
If you don't have any experience in server administration, than you need to get a fully managed box. A few reputable managed companies. http://www.wiredtree.com/ http://liquidweb.com http://handynetworks.com/ http://www.800hosting.com Also, they could, or could not be a powerful server, but you have yet to tell us about your site. What software will you use most importantly.
I was thinking the same thing. I'm not sure how he figured the amount of hits he would get, but even if his stats are correct, he wouldn't need a dedicated server just yet, a VPS at the most. A reliable shared plan should do to keep startup costs low.
Do you know how many memory, CPU you would need for keeping 200 concurrent connections running? Most vendors limit 25 mysql concurrent connections in shared hosting environment. 200 connections at the same time is definitely different story
No, because he didn't say he was using MySQL, or what software the script is written in. Besides, I'm not sure how he figured he would get 200 concurrent visitors.
