Guys do you think having a degree matters in the world of internet marketing?

Below is what I have learned and understand,
Link Building, Natural SEO, Competitor Research, Keyword Research, Meta Tags and Keyword Density, Landing Pages, Affiliate Marketing, Google Adsense and Account Management, to name but a few

I am lucky enough to work with some real big companies in the UK now and
I have no degree but it took me near on two years to land a job with in the industry,

I am 33 now and was a drop out in school; the time was never right for me to learn anything,

Until 5 years ago I turned on a PC for the first time I started on Ebay selling antiques,
From there I got a bit of funding form certain originations here in the UK,
Which intern but me in touch with the mad world of internet marketing,

From that point on I was hooked and began to show for the first time passion about something so I decided that the new world of internet marketing was for me,

But as I said it has taken me two years to get a job because I have no qualifications,
So in my eyes it has lot to do with no having a degree, or any grades behind you,

I got the job now because the guys who employee me liked me for not giving up,

Do you guys have any similar stories or experiences within the trade?

I love this saying and keep it in my mind all the time,. And it helped me get were I am today

Experiences counts a lot but in a corporate setting it is the academic papers that can open doors. So if you are running your own biz, that would be fine, but if you are hoping to join those big marketing consulting group, then paper qualifications is a must.

No need to have a formal qualification if you own your business. Only practical knowledge is essential on which you can build your empire. Cheers :)

As i've always said a degree will get you in the door, but your portfolio and experience is what really counts.

Also I find that people who have a degree charge more, because they can. They know people will pay it for their quality work rather than go to someone who doesn't have a degree and risk not getting such good quality.

A degree may not enough, if you are aiming for the high ended jobs like Mckinsley or Boston Consulting Group, you will at least need an MBA from the Top 50 Business Schools.

No formal education is required for internet marketers, but you should know how to start websites and promote your sites.

The Internet is a great equalizer frankly speaking, if you are working on the Internet, it does not depend on education, what color of your skin etc.

    it still helps.

Plus it's better to be face to face with clients, instead of internet work.

    Greetings WisdomTool,

I agree, wholeheartedly! Here's my take on the matter (prepare yourself as I'm about to get long winded.)

Any person, from any walk of life, can connect to the Internet and make it "BIG" as long as they have faith, realistic goals, and are consistent in their approach to become a successful Internet-preneur. Now, in the real off-the-Internet world, it may take a little more convincing (as in a degree) to get noticed but this isn't the case with the Web.

    For Example:

    1. Does one need Internet marketing experience to succeed? NO!

There are several "so called gurus" online that have made millions of dollars on the Internet and they readily admit they have no Internet marketing experience to back them up.

Many of them rode the carpet to fortunes simply by teaming up with another marketer who helped them get their name known. And... you can too!

    2. Does one need to have their own product to make it BIG? NO!

With access to PLR (Private Label Rights), MRR (Master Resale Rights) and the like, anyone can start selling a product they did not create and make a fortune at it.

Choosing the right product coupled with consistent persistence is the key.

    3. Does one need to be well known to make any sales online? NO!

Again, this is a myth that is constantly circulating the Net. Frankly speaking, I made over $30,000 my first "true year" on the Internet when I became a reseller for a subliminal product that wasn't even mine! Nobody knew me from Adam when I started this new venture and I can honestly say it was a great year. :)

Better still, I knew squat about Internet marketing and I still managed to rake in the sales! Bottom line: it was a great product and it basically sold itself. All I had to do was attract the right kind of people to the site. The product "descriptions" did the rest.

I had a well known marketer, at the time, tell me to keep my descriptions "short and sweet" but I didn't listen to her. I put as many paragraphs into the product explanation as I felt necessary to give a complete explanation of what the product was about and how it would improve one's life if they took the opportunity to TRY it.

So... let me ask you -- did I need Internet marketing experience to serve these people? Nope!

    Did I make money? Yep!

    Enough said! Next ... :)

    4. Does one need a web site to cash in on the buying craze? NO!

Certainly not, especially if you look at eBay, authors who are affiliate sellers, and social sites. Plenty of people on eBay, selling ebooks, and they're making a mint with their $5.00 book sales. Plus, with all the social networking sites, article directories, and eZine publications at your disposal -- YOU CAN earn a decent living on the Internet without putting up a blog or a website.

Just join a few affiliate programs, acquire an autoresponder, and write your way to sales. Sure, it takes work to create the content but when you measure that again the sales you can bring in -- isn't it worth the effort?

    I'll let you decide. :)

    All good things,
    Bonnie

    Ste1975:

My apologies for not understanding your question.

In light of this new revelation, I would state "it depends" on who is doing the interviewing at the time you're applying for the Internet Marketing position.

Some might feel a degree is necessary, while other businesses are more lax in their approach and feel "learning as you go" is adequate enough.

I'd have to say, since the Internet is still a relatively new marketing medium -- experts are born every minute!

    All good things,
    Bonnie
