I'd like to make a database of directories sorted by traffic/payment. The only requirement is a valid Google Analytics account. Welcome and thanks in advance.
you can create guest analytics account. No problem mikey. But there are not many owners using analytics on their directories.
There is no need for that - you are required only to upload a single PDF file: Google Analytics -> Visitors -> Visitors Trending -> Absolute Unique Visitors [Date Range: The last calendar month i.e. 1.1. - 31.1.] -> Export -> PDF
I read not long ago that it was a very bad idea to show your site stats, as in like a seriously bad idea, you shouldn't be showing your traffic and other stats to other people, kinda dangerous, it was expressed that way at least.
No i dont mean about having anything to hide, its just seen as a very bad idea to share site statistics. I dont fully understand it myself but when i read it i was suprised.
It is not a matter of having anything to hide - it is more a matter of having nothing to prove. Personally I will not allow third party scripts on my site for anyone else to track my traffic. I feel that is just way to invasive in a competitive environment. I have less of a problem telling people what my traffic is and there was a list I used to give a printed traffic report to and the list would be ranked by traffic. The problem I found with that is even when you provide someone with a written report from traffic stat programs located right on your server there are people who will still show negativity about it. Making comments about paid traffic etc even when all my traffic is purely organic. It just got to the point with me that I decided I just don't need to justify my traffic to people like that. Show me a top directory like JoeAnt or Aviva or Business.com that would allow third party traffic tracking scripts on their site and I might reconsider.
OK, but isn't your site http://www.authoritydirectory.com ? As I can see, you use Google Analytics too .. But never mind - as I said previously, no one is forced. Thanks for comments.
You are completely correct - "I" do use google analytics and only I have access to my analytics account. Google analytics is there for my personal use and not the use of third parties or third party sites.
I did use the G analytics for one of my directories long time back. Oneday -it sent me 250 search referrers within 12 hrs and the next day it penalized that directory. Never had the courage to use it again
A google employee could check your data any time Bruce. They'd probably get fired but still.... You said you don't have 3rd part scripts on your site, and his point was that you do - which is true
Mike what I said is that "Personally I will not allow third party scripts on my site for anyone else to track my traffic." and analytics are not there for a third party to track my traffic. It is a tool for my use. Like you said anyone at google who snooped would probably get fired. I guess that you do have a point though and with the comment from jhnrang I removed the analytics code. I hardly ever look at it anyway. I use the a stats program built into my host. The only reason I ever put the analytics on there was I read the post in your blog on analytics and tried it out while I read it.
It really did not tell me anything new that my stats program wasn't already. The only thing that analytics could do is track conversions which was kind of nice. But it was not nice enough to make me log in there to check it very often. I get emails for every conversion from the site. My stats program supposedly tracks conversions also, but I don't have a nice tutorial written by you to take me through setting it up. Tracking the conversions is just not a big enough deal for me to sit down and figure out how to set it up. You remember how long it took me to get to reading your tutorial and trying analytics... One thing that analytics is starting to do is work with adwords accounts for tracking between analytics and adwords and I do use adwords. Just mainly on my other site.
