I've used Vista, and I'm not convinced it's any better than XP.

I hear a few people say it's better, but I'm not convinced.

From a programmer's point of view, Vista is by far greater than XP. Just think about what you can do in .Net 3.0/3.5 (+ WPF, WCF, etc), technologies that are not fully/natively supported on XP.

Also, from a security pov, the same thing, Vista is far ahead of XP. But this is disputable in any OS (even Linux). Vista has a better security model, but if you are an average/dumb user, you can break it with or without 5000 firewalls, AVs, antispywares and so on.

From a gamer's pov, Vista is not better than XP simply because it runs slower. This is disputable also: why everyone uses Ultimate when noone uses even 10% of what's inside Ultimate. Snobbism? Maybe...

Your viewpoints are subjective, and depends on software available, not the OS itself. Also, your last statement on gamers point of view can be changed to say Vista is better because of DirectX 10.

What security model and programming research are you referring to?

Search about the new Windows 2008 Server/Vista SP1 kernel. There is also a presentation on Youtube, search "Minwin". A part of that is now integrated in Vista SP1 and 2008 Server.
Also see/use .NET 3.0/3.5, Visual Studio 2008, and so on.

Hmmm... there are not so many games on DX 10/10.1 right now, but there will be in the future.

From a programmer's point of view... No, let's say from a programmer's point of view who solely lives off of the income coming from his clientèle, XP is far better. What does .NET 3 give you that 2.0 does not?
And since we are all here working with web stuff - can you use Vista machine to host a production web site? XP Pro comes with the IIS which can do that.

IIS can be installed on Windows Vista, same as in XP, and you get version 7, which is far better than 6. (and better than Apache if you ask me. See some Channel 9 presentations here.

I'm not saying that XP/Linux/whatever "sux" in comparsion with Vista/2008 Server, but Microsoft is going better with every new release.

With .Net 3.0/3.5? Well, much easyer (to use/learn) than classes in 2.0. Also, many language features like LINQ, WPF, WCF, WWF, native AJAX controls, and so on. You can write Office addons easyer, Silverlight apps, integration with Popfly, Javascript Intellisense support...

Let's not jump the gun, ehh.

I haven't had the chance to test vista yet, and probably wont until absolutely have to. I'm happy with my ubuntu distro.

I think that Vista is getting better, but if you don't want DirectX 10 games, and your hardware is fine under XP (one of my machines is a Quad Core with 4GB Ram, so I have to run Vista 64 on it, although I guess XP 64 would do) - I can't see any reason to run Vista over XP really. That's always the problem though - I remember thinking the same kind of thing when XP first came out - why bother upgrading if 98 runs fine? (I missed ME out completely).

When I first saw Vista I really enjoyed looking at the new desktop glossy features and I thought the new widgets were pretty cool. Now that I have it, I don't think they are that amazing anymore lol. I could switch back to XP if I really wanted to, but I really am starting to adapt to Vista even though inmy opinion it is not worth the money. I am actually thinking about switching all together to MAC.

    vista coz:
    - sexier
    - more secure
    - features (improved search, indexing, support for multicore processors)
    - equally stable (or better) than xp with sp1 installed
    - better backup solutions

    disadvantages:
    - driver support
    - consumes lots of resources/memory/hdd space for installation
    - not compatible with some older programs
    - requires more powerful computer specifications

Conclusoin: If you have a powerful comp and you don't see yourself running older programs, get vista. I'm using it, so far no problems... and its just.....sweet.

I'd get vista if I have a better comp. I heard vista uses a lot of memory. The only obvious difference I can see between vista and xp is vista looks cool and got dx10. Other than that I don't see why I should switch to it.

I wouldn't get Vista even if I had a good comp lol. Vista does use a ton of memory, and while it supposedly takes advantage of dual-core processors in a better fashion than XP, I don't think its costs outweigh its benefits.
