TEHRAN, March 19 (UPI) -- Many Iranian youths rallied in streets across the country, shouting "Death to Ahmadinejad," in celebrations marking the end of the Persian calendar year. The last Wednesday of the Persian calendar is celebrated as the Fire Festival in Iran, with bonfires and firecrackers marking the occasion. In the western city of Ahvaz, angry mobs declared "Freedom is our legitimate right" while demonstrators in the western city of Sanandaj shouted "Death to (Iranian President Mahmoud) Ahmadinejad," Ynetnews reported Wednesday. The police in Tehran were out in force and, though they were met with a barrage of firecrackers, the situation didn't escalate beyond what is typical for the Fire Festival, local reports cited in the news report said. Ahmed Raza-Radan, the police chief in Tehran, warned demonstrators against violating the rule of law in a news conference. "The police force has resolved to detain any party-goers who break the law. The secret police will have full control, and will not hesitate to photograph citizens for evidence," he said. source
Big deal. Ahmadinejad isn't a popular guy with the clergy or urbanites in Iran. That is why it was so stupid for Bush to paint him as Hitler. He's just a right wing nutjob the way Bush is a right wing nutjob. When his term is up, the people will likely not vote him back in. And "Hitler", will retire from evil..
It takes a special kind of person to read about Iranian citizens demanding freedom from their government and to think this story was about Bush. I couldn't care less about Ahmadinejad, but I have great hope for the Iranian people. I think their efforts to demand freedom from their repressive government is something to be applauded.
It takes a special type of person to look at the similarities of two different countries? He's simply pointing out that like Iranians, Americans are fed up with their dumb ass leaders as well, as evidenced by an approval rating in the 20s...even lower for congress. What's so wrong about that?
See Rub3X's response. And the point that, protesting against Ahmadinejad is no big deal. He's just another elected figurehead. The average American thinks he is a dictator, but he's not. Those students who are protesting against him can only get away with it because he is on the outs with the Ayatollah right now. The people who run the country are the clerics, not Ahmadinejad. Protesting him is like protesting Nancy Pelosi. You must have been a big fan of the Shah then.
Ahmadinejad isn't a dictator, and personally I like the guy. It is just that he has failed in a few sectors in his own country, such as youth unemployment is a huge problem in Iran, so is the economy, but he has excelled Iran in other areas. He tried and, the votes will tell if he has failed or not! At least he hasn't invaded any countries and threatened, like someone else!
Brown, why dont you explain to the people here on dp how the iranian leader came into power and how our government was directly responsible for the events that brought the clergy into power. The fact is bush waged war based on lies than has a convenient plausible deniability saying he didnt know the cia made it look like there could have been wmd's and al quiada in iraq. When it was the leader of the cia who actually claimed it was teh bush administration that tried to force the cia to make it look like there could be wmd's and al qiada in iraq? I dont see anything wrong with guerillas statement. I bet if ahmedinejad ruled the strongest country in the world he would appear to be a more sane leader and the rest of the world would be the terrorists. The point is we helped to destroy democracy in iran and not one of you neocons will stand up and speak this truth and more alarmingly isthat you still blindly trust the same kind of administration that helped destroy democracy in iran in the 1950's. Whats wrong with this picture?????????
He is a massive dictator. He has helped to fund and support his proxy armies all over that region from hezbolla to syria. No different then what we have done in 3rd world countries since ww2 ended. I wonder who would win in a game of backgammon between him and bush? I wonder if they ever played before
Ahmadinejad is a lot uglier than Bush, but infinitely smarter. I've never played backgammon, but if it requires any brains, Bush better get Cheney to whisper in his ear.
Because you support resistance groups does not make you a dictator, a dictator is someone who does not have democratic elections and does not leave office!
