That's not easy to compare between free and paid solution, I voted ZEND GUARD ($696 !!!)

I can crack any zend guard file except the ones that use 5.0 or 4.1's "strong obfuscation" option :D

I also voted for Zend Guard, the problem is that it's really expensive :(

i would suggest not wasting your money on it. Its crackable and its encoding sucks. In my opinion I say PHPShield. PHP Shield is sourceguardian rebranded, they just changed the name. Plus PHPShield has no proof it can be cracked where as Ioncube and Zend both can.

I currently have ioncube and its great.

Yes FreePHPEncoder looks good. Its not really that secure though as its decoder/loader file can easily be decompiled which would allow a user to reverse the encrypting but what i really look forward about freephpencoder.com is that their working on bytecode encryption which would make it very very secure.

Zend Guard is by far the easiest/flexible one to use imho.

What I've done in my scripts is a custom solution. In my opinion, between a custom solution used only on one script and a mass-marketed solution used on hundreds of scripts, the custom solution will win.

Also, depending on your needs, your requirements will be different. I'm more worried about piracy than with someone taking a function from me so for my most important functions I'll call up a specially prepared script on my registration server to serve required bits of code not provided in the actual script.

This way, even if they're able to see the contents of my encoded and obfuscated files, they won't be running the software if they don't have legit credentials. Obviously, everything can be cracked these days...and I'm not saying my stuff will out-perform zend or ioncube in the long run, but I do take comfort in knowing exactly what it's doing and how it's doing it.
