setup a service people can't live without and require them to signup using email before they get it. You could offer software programs that can be downloaded free after they create and account for example. Start a myspace first and get a few thousand targeted users on your friends list. Then send them to a site where they can join a newsletter to learn about the targeted blah blah blah and that's how I'm planning on doing my next list.
We have a few thousand - I send out ours in a newsletter format, most people will except it if you are polite about it and give them an easy way to unsubscribe. It also helps to give some kind of incentive - like Internet only discounts...or a free PDF of tips about something that your users might find useful. About 30% of our monthly websales come from conversions on our newsletter. It can be very lucrative. Sign up for mine for a month or two to get an idea of what we do. (you'll find the link in the sig) You don't have to be a customer to get the newsletter. And I would appreciate any feedback that you would have to offer as far as the content provided. We use Exact Target - they have a monthly fee, a yearly subscription fee, and a tiny per email fee it's not to bad price wise...you end up getting a lot out of it. Considering 1. Your list stays whitelisted as long as you follow the rules 2. You get excellent reporting 3. The interface is a little difficult to get used to at first, but then once you get it, it's easy to do a mailing. 4. They are an ASP so you can access your account anywhere there is an Internet connection. 5. They allow dynamic content - it's really easy to set up 6. They have really nice tutorial and help files 7. They have a system that checks your wording for SPAMMY words and then recommends that you change them so it will get through to the most inboxes. Here is a little tip, if you use them - be very careful how you mail to AOL, make doubly sure that the AOL recipient knows what your email looks like and has definitly opted in...otherwise you will find that your ET account is suddenly deactivated the first time your AOL SPAM complaints go above .01 percent - it's happend to me three times now and it's extremely frustrating...in fact I don't even mail to AOL account any more due to the users not being very educated about what is SPAM and what isn't. They are very trigger happy with the SPAM complaint button. Otherwise I would highly recommend you look into this service or a provider that is similar. If you don't want to hassle too much with setting up your email, managing your list, and dealing with getting blacklisted. Good luck! PuprlePeeps
An option for them to opt out before signing up? Is it actually a legal requirement that you can't ask for an email address to go on a mailing list in return for content?
Can any body answer my question please? How can I send mails to my list and gonna to inbox? I have 5300 e-mails right now ,but the emails gonna to junk for hotmail
XFiles - I think they were discussing what you wanted in this thread http://forums.digitalpoint.com/showthread.php?t=193401
You'd be surprised. A little while back I came across someone who paid to send a mail out to 350 000. The response? One measly sale, and that only for a book. The list simply wasn't targetted enough, and as a result it was pretty much worthless. I'm guessing that a lot of those emails also went out to old addresses, either bounces or unmonitored spam-bucket emails. It all depends on how you get people to sign up. If you offer them something that looks a bit suspect, how many will subscribe with their main email address anyway?
Thanks for contributions. The figures are wild! Don't tell the list building gurus, they would all pack up and go home!! My own list, mainly one targetted niche is building slowly - 65. Since I have not mastered traffic generation yet, its quite good. Right now I am thinking about 'GetSubscribers' (GetResponse's subscriber building technique). I did not understand it before, but then I came across someone using it (opt-in) without realising it. Basically, when you get the double opt-in e-mail and click the link, you get a page with ads a bit like AdWords. You tick the boxes you want to opt-in to and you get subscribed with no double opt-in. Clever! As a site owner you only pay for subscribers. Anyone using it? Let me know how it is going. Regards, RPM

I've got 1800 on one list (that one makes regular money) and 700 on another (that's new and isn't making money). The larger list is in the forex market, and those people do spend money.
