I had a good chat with Dan from vilesilencer the other day and he mentioned how poor the quality of many of the directories submission descriptions are these days and I couldn't agree more. I had a chat with Kev and Gary who've been in the industry for longer than most and they put together a blog about Directory Integrity It's phase one of a few tutorials and while we might all have some input or different views I think it makes for quite good reading.
Being in the industry for nearly one and half years and being witness to many ups and downs in the industry- I don't know if I would call myself newbie or experienced directory owner-as everything on the WWW is always evolving. But I can say that --the blog-post is a mine of knowledge for all directory owners.
Informative blog post. This is the sort of thing we need to see more often. What I have been trying to do for a long time now is to move away from the negative element and try to instill some positive values into the industry. If the experienced heads, share their knowledge rather than withholding it, they build a much more positive end result. Admittedly it does take time to word a blog post, in such a way as to be informative enough without appearing patronising. I am working also on a few blog posts of this type, to help directory owners/editors to differentiate poor submissions from good ones.
I agree Dan, and it was pretty much our chat that prompted me to get Kev to release his blog which he's had gathering dust for a long time but never bothered to post. I'm a little surprised that people haven't taken the chance to share thier input on the blog either on a negative or positive, because we really do need to start working together sharing knowledge, not against. Even the most experienced of those in the directory industry should not be adverse to being given some input and taking things on board and the lesser experienced shouldn't feel to self important to accept the knowledge offered by others. Let's hope that it's not a case of people thinking they already know it all when clearly they don't.
yes, i am the newbie from this industry... i would like to learn.. everyday i search at google looking about more info for directory owner... i going serious for this industry... and always want to improve my knowledge... now i looking a more info about:- description how to set good guidelines what a most directory owner must do for spammer or type of spammer how to give a good service to our customer how to make search engine love our directory sorry if you all not understand what i wright here p/s: i have bad in english and grammar so sad but i really like to share... sorry
Very informative blog, very good reading, its good to see that someone is taking the time to write on how directories should be run as a business rather then a hobby. excellent thanks aubenrey
Sorry to off thread here but is there anything wrong with what i posted ? Seemed i got a red rep telling me to mind my own business Wow cannot even comment on a good blog without getting red reps. Again sorry for off topic I best shut up now not got many reps left. Thanks aubenrey
Ignore that kind of behaviour aubenrey, it's only a minority. I'll send some green love to you to make up for it.
Another great post Jamie (still owe you that +rep, nobody's earned any +rep so I can't give you it yet), glad to see it's not just my directory that gets free (and paid!) submissions with terrible descriptions. Sometimes I think 'does my submit form say Keywords instead of Description?'. I can't remember the last time I accepted a site without manually editing the title or description. If it's not stuffing the description, it's stuffing the keywords. Hopefully some of the newer guys will pick up on this and read the blog post to see what they should be submitting.
I've posted about this on the IVS forum and included links to the 2 "editorial standards" blog posts. I'm serious about encouraging directory owners to improve their current standards. We should all be thinking quality not quantity.
I'm a new guy, and I'm learning as I go. Originally when I started my directory, I was accepting sites that I wouldn't even consider now. I was also not doing much editing. I'm doing more now, and also trying to clean up my mistakes from a couple months ago (which is turning out to be a big task...oh well, live and learn).
