Why do people start directories

Can someone explain the purpose for directories, as most don't seem to have any revenue potential.

 

For their own SEO purpose.
OR
Its their Hobby
OR
Ofcourse revenue.

 

i noticed someone sold their directories at Sitepoint recently,
but most of the data is fake,
no idea why people still placed bids on the auctions...
imo waste money $$$

 

I do directories for my own SEO purpose and for hobby, not really for revenue. But of course I would welcome anyone who wants to submit their sites into my directories.

 

Most likely because they want to try get a quick buck.

 

Effective directories generate revenue and good source for promoting websites.

 

For me it's revenue and something I enjoy doing.

Well why do people build websites ?

To answer your question i posted an other question

 

Primarily for business reasons, that can vary from making money from submissions, providing other promotional opportunities within the directory, helping with promo methods for their other websites.

Because their always desired, sought after by other webmasters to gain backlinks, resulting in higher serps, resulting in SE traffic.

 

For the purpose of making sites like the ones in your sig have more internet presence thus increasing the potential for sales. Love the promo site btw.

 

You sell promotional business products. What's the return on investment for your buyers? Increased revenue through increased brand visibility. Directories do the same thing - increase brand visibility for websites.

As to revenue potential, most any website has revenue potential.

 

It may be some one's hobby.. but main target must be revenue genarate from it

 

Fame... glory... women... the shine in puts in one's eyes... the admiration of doing something that takes a lot of time and gains little cash...

What more reasons could one need?

 

People starts directories because its a very easy way to start their own site in less work and got some money$

 

I understand all the comments - just seems like a lot of work for what appears to be a small amount of revenue - and if just to promote your own site, there are already thousands of them.

I was just wondering the benefit to the directory owner.

 

You can start a crappy directory with a free script, free template and free hosting - total cost to start 0

 

yes, try yourself... and look if you like or not, if you like just go buy a good script and start your own.... if not just forget it cause you need to concentrate if you start once...

make it your hobby.. and you will love it!! and you can generate the income
