How important is to have keywords in your domain?

Discussion in 'Search Engine Optimization' started by $earner, Mar 13, 2008.

Let's say I have two sites with the same content (not looking for a discussion on duplicated content) and one has a domain with keywords and the other does not. Which one do you think would be more successful on search engines?

    Thanks!!!

Keywords on domain name doesn't really indicate that you'll rank well...
It still depends on how you'll optimize your site...

But a domain with keywords on it somehow gains an advantage...

This is just my opinion, but I think having your main keywords in your domain is important and will rank better than non-keyword domains. (all other SEO being equal) That doesn't mean it has to be your actual domain name though. I've had great luck with sites that I created in a sub-directory and made sure that my keywords were in the sub directory name. So if you have a domain name and your keywords are fun cars you could do something like this.... www.coolproducts.com/funcars/funcars.html

I have sub pages like this that come up very high for their keywords, and they're not related to the main domain name in any way. I'm convinced having the keywords in the url helps. As well as page title and the other normal SEO stuff.

keyword in domain name definitely is a plus for all smaller or new sites.

IF however you are a very old site ( 10+ yrs ) or authority site, then if is of little or no importance any longer.

you optimize your site based on keywords and use keyword in anchor text to get high SERP. so from that concept, keyword in the domain surely helps.

I have seen several sites that had no SEO done to them at all, but ranked number one because they had an older domain, a legitimate content site, and the keywords in the domain. So yes, anytime you can get your keywords in your domain its a really nice bonus - and its getting harder to do these days.

keyword in domain certainly helps a lot also from users point of view. People can easily remember your domain when it is keyword based.

Having keywords in domain gives some weight in search ranking but the biggest benefit is that it will be very easy to get inbound links with your keywords as the anchor text. That is the real value of having keywords in the domain.

WebGazelle...you hit the nail on the head there. Also, it helps the google bots immediately identify what your site is most likely about as well...

Think about it...if you have your main keyword in your domain as well as the title, the bots will likely be able to assume exactly what your site is about before they actually get to the post

Even for a new website, for a noncompetitive keyword you can jump quickly to #1 with your keyword(s) in your domain. That won't necessarily give you much traffic, if the keyword is noncompetitive. But yes, just having the keyword(s) in your domain can give you a quick edge on the other websites which don't have that keyword in their domain name.

Indeed.......having keywords in your domain does not effect your rankings but still its better to have your main keywords in your domain as it helps to its user to get an idea about the site and also help them to remember the url of your site.......

It is a good SEO practice to normally include your keyword in your domain name, as some submission sites only accept the main domain i.e. yourdomain(dot)com this way you can easily promote your site and at the same time gain rank with your keyword.

    (dot)= .

It`s MUCH easier to rank a site with keywords in domain - and my opinion is not based on the information on this topic available, but on personal experience.

A keyword rich domain doesn't mean that you have actually optimized that. Perform a complete on page optimization of your website to make it search engine friendly. This will help in easy crawling and indexing of your website.
