The idea to go for CMS with less available free templates really makes sense.
I'm gonna try creating some and sell them here :D

Anyone having suggestion which CMS-es seem to have bright futures?

It's a great method, I design themes and people regularly buy the links-the problem with diffrent cms is not as many sponsors as wordpress.. I don't really have a problem with people downloading my themes as I have some themes end up on most downloaded on wpfreethemes. I had one that has gotten over 100 downloads a day and a half- so it really is a great way to build unlimited links.. You really have no clue how many people will fall in love with your theme and download like crazy. Before I started designing and selling links on themes- I bought one for a site- Site went from a PR 0 to PR4 in one update - no other links built- I bought 3 links on 3 diffrent themes

    "The SEO CMS

MODx helps you build sites that perform well in search engines – in fact, we think it's a great SEO CMS. Human readible URLs that Google loves is part of the reason, and allowing you to build tight, semantic XHTML/CSS also plays a role."

you'd better do not waste your money, it is very dangerous to get your site banned.

IM thinking it is dangerous. With the phpld Aviva directory got a spanking for branding a directiry skin with their name. Im sure this also has to be because they are one of the top directories or were, hense more saturation of the skin to the marketplace.

also Matt cutts talks about wordpress sponsoring here: http://www.mattcutts.com/blog/by-the-way-2/ ( link called "sponsored themes in wordpress')

As far as i know Aviva got done for selling links and not the template. Yet it only lost its PR which means nothing anyway. The traffic stayed the same.

I will say this but alot won't like it- Google wants all the money for themselves- According to them basically you should design a theme and give it away for free with no payment for me the designer- Ofcourse google is against it- They are against anything that they don't know how to fix in thier algo. There will NEVER and I repeat NEVER be a day when someone won't come up with a new way to get over on google's algo cause even if theses go out of style which they won't. We will find another way- Here is the flaw in the wordpress thinking- I make themes - so if I wanted to advertise my own theme site- I put 10 free themes. I cannot control who uses them can I- Nope so if google starts penalizing for the made free by links- Guess what- I will sell only one link the designer- Now google cannot and will not penalize a designer for making a theme and giving it away for free- How can you truly tell if a site had the money to pay to design a theme and release it for free- But publicly they have to say this is wrong and bad so less people will use the method and also so people who are scared of the mighty google will run in terror and fear..If google said -Ecommerce is bad alot of people would close down thier sites today

It works, but you're going to see these links have less effectiveness in the near future (or maybe they already do and nobody has isolated the actual impact of these links).

Google looks at the text around a link and can algorithmically detect your typical footer credit links.

Plus, they are super close to breaking out being able to scan pages as the user sees them so footer links would obviously have less value due to how little action they get in eyetracking studies.

It's better than nothing, but IMO it makes more sense if you have it targeted to niches or are a designer / marketer showing off your work.

Ok, now lets look at it the other way. I'm 9th on Google for a very competitive keyword. I spend $100 or so sponsoring various themes on behalf of my competition. They get busted, i get the first spot. Yet according to Google there is nothing your competition can do to effect your rank.

Read the article he posted. It was due to other stuff, not selling links.
