Yes I agree, make good comments on related blogs you find ranking in google. Search via google's blog search then start commenting on peoples sites, only make good quality comments or they will be deleted and you will be wasting your time.

do a search on the forum here for digixmas - its a FREE directory submitter. If you have a very low or no Pagerank get yourself a few paid PR5-PR6 links dont bother with paid submissions. add a blog to your site and write about the subject and your site! there is another free piece of software called "commentkahuna" - do a google search. Its a nice and FREE piece of blog comment software, that searches blogs for no follow comments, ideal for backlinks etc. remember not to spam. backlink can be for additional pagerank or more traffic or obviously both. only software that i have found to be any good is ibp submission software

Social bookmarking are sites like digg.com, stumbleupon.com and a lot of other sites. Their purpose is to allow users to post and share links. Usually there is a kind of voting system and only the most popular submissions are shown on the front page of the social bookmarking site. Try to google "social bookmarking" and try and register with a few sites to try it out yourself.
it helps if it's to do with your niche etc but I am just thinking of the next PR ranking - say you PR 0 and u have one edu link from a PR7 - the PR update might bump you to PR5. I have seen sites with just one link with and .edu domain being bumped from zero to pr5.
