Google determine minimum CPC costs based on your landing page. When you have been slapped with a $5 min bid, it means you have a landing page problem.

It could also mean that your keyword is not related to your product. There was a guy on here a few weeks ago bidding on eBay hoping for wholesale leads. This is untargeted, and will get slapped. So make sure your relevant and secondly make sure you have a good landing page.

i would suggest you to start a new adgroup and yes obviously you have to optimize your landing page for the keywords you bid

Yes, add them. Your LP should be max relevant to keywords you bid on

I was trying to promote a newsletter/ebook via clickbank through adwords. Tried some words like - stock bot, make money, and other keywords related to stock and make money. All are showing up as minimum $12 per click to activate search. Is it the same problem as above or people have so much money to throw away on generic term like "make money" at $12 per click?

if the minimum bid is set to $10 then you are being slapped for irrelevance or improper setup and others who are showing up properly are paying much less.

If your minimum is 0.10 but it costs $12 to get shown on the 1st page, then the competition is willing to pay that much for that keywords.

Maybe you are in a very competitive niche so that's why it is pretty easy for Google to determine that your keywords need some extra funding in order to continue to be active. Or maybe you are posting in the wrong keywords or irrelevant keywords and targeting traffic instead of keyword relevance in allowing ads to appear. :)

The landing page is part of the formula but don't forget about the rest...

For calculating a keyword's minimum bid:

    * The keyword's historical clickthrough rate (CTR) on Google; CTR on the Google Network is not considered
    * The relevance of the keyword to the ads in its ad group
    * The quality of your landing page
    * Your account history, which is measured by the CTR of all the ads and keywords in your account
    * Other relevance factors

There are other factors but the #1 factor for minimum bid is landing page. Trust me I have dealt with this about 1,000 times. Here is how to determine what is going on.

If your minimum bid is anything over $1 there is an error or improper setup.

If you minimum bid is $.50 - 0.01 this is quality score variance.

Most people are concerned about the $1, $5 and $10 slaps. These slaps are not normal and indicate a MAJOR problem which can usually be solved by 3 things

    1. Improper usage of display and destination URL
    2. Improper landing pages
    3. Irrelevant keyword clustering

If your minimum bids are under $1 then you start to fall under quality score variance. If quality score is poor the problem is usually

    1. improper keyword clustering
    2. non targeted landing pages
    3. poorly created text ads

You guys really need to understand the difference from a bad QS and the difference from simply not setting up your campaigns the right way and Google slapping you for it.

Sorry, absolutely without a doubt disagree. All the parts work together and you can't say one of them is the "most important". They are all important.

Example - I bid on the keyword "dogs" and use my dogs landing page. I have a great QS and a low min bid. If I change my keyword to "clouds" I'll end up with a high min bid and most likely a poor QS.

ok maybe i should clarify the keyword has to at least do with the subject. You are correct going from dog to cloud will get you $5 minimums.
