http://www6.comcast.net/news/articles/general/2008/03/10/NEWS-POPE-SINS-DC/ The pope apparently can make up new sins for whatever he wishes. however, it would best further his case if he were to first rewrite the Bible and inject his name before God.
Nothing new here. He (they) have been doing that for years. Before their was even popes, there were the pharisees that did the same things. Man doesn't change.
See http://www.nzherald.co.nz/section/2/story.cfm?c_id=2&objectid=10497386 for a list of the 7 new sins. As with the old ones I have no problem abiding by the new ones. While I would like to be obscenely wealthy I can't imagine that I would hoard my wealth, instead I'd share it around. We all pollute the environment but we all also try to minimise our "footprint". survival has to come first. Managing pollution is a luxury for the middle classes.
You're missing the principles, who is the "pope" to tell me what a new sin is? Is he somehow a better man than I that he can dictate what is sin and what is not? If men are created equal under God and this man writes new laws in the name of God, then why can't I write laws as well? This whole religious propaganda is really making me sick. Not that I consider myself a Christian, but to the ones who adhere to it, the Catholics are hijacking your religion.
The P&R section must keep you busy then Following your argument - who was Moses when he brought down the 10 commandments? When the prophets (include as you see fit, but I'd expect Jesus and Mohamed on the list) say they speak for God how do you know they weren't psychopathic liars? Religion is about societal conformity more than anything. Based around a concept of one or more "Gods" - from the Aboriginal people of Australia, through the Greeks and Romans to the current major religions, societal conformity is the common thread. You then need to decide if that is a good thing or a bad thing...
If my history is correct the catholics were the first christians. Catholic comes from the term catholikos meaning universal in greek. Now i havent studied all of this and i really dont have much of a comment on the new sins, but i have successfully debated the popes role as it was written in the bible. The hijackers of the christian bible is the king james version. Now who the heck authorized some gay king to approve or disaprove any version of the bible, especially one that changed many parts of it. Protestants didnt even come into the picture until the 1600's so they just decided to pop out of no where lol.there are over 40,000 different protestant churches that each have a different interpretation of the bible(jesus said there is one faith and one church)but only one catholic church. This is a historical slam dunk here.
Of all the reasons to object to a mere mortal laying down laws in the name of "God" I don't see his sexuality as being at all relevant. Jesus was meant to have been born of a virgin and died a virgin. How likely was that? It's far more likely that he was gay and it's been hushed up by all the prudes that have written the rules since then. Why else would they have removed all trace of emotional intimacy? A man who can do all that but has no bonds with other people beyond a prostitute and the disciples? But we've wandered way off topic... back to the new sins... don't you feel they are just value judgements? Just as sloth is a relative term so is "polluting the environment"
I won't debate catholicism with you, I don't like to offend anyone's personal beliefs. Fortunately for myself, I don't believe in any of it and will not be restricted. But if this is the evolution of Christianity then I am ashamed to ever call myself one.
From the other threads I read here I suspect the time will come (and soon) where we will be required to select a religion and "atheism" won't be acceptable. The interference of religion within politics is increasing globally and we're in for some interesting times.
Maybe the new ones are not as gothic/kewl as the old ones, but they still make sense and resposible of Vatican. I don't see anything to counter.
Not as long as I carry a gun they won't. I'd love to see who will try and "require" me. But I wouldn't doubt it happening soon, it will go in conjunction with continental unions.
The Roman Empire had five Patriarchs in the cities of Constantinople, Antioch, Alexandria, Jerusalem and Alexandria. The Eastern Orthodox Church were the first christians.
Catholics were not first, and not all Catholic churches are united under one system of beliefs. There are some factions that don't even recognize the authority of the Pope (they are obviously no longer recognized by the Vatican). The Protestant movement began as a protest of the abuses of the Catholic church and as way of questioning the Pope's domain. The Catholic church at the time was basically protecting the system of feudalism by keeping the masses from owning land or amassing wealth. For centuries Catholics were not even free to read the Bible on their own.
Actually quite the opposite. athiesm will be the only legal religion except in some areas where islam will remain the only legal religion. In the USA, we already have bills making their ways through to limit Christianity and eventually to make it illegal.
the sexual orientation wasnt the main point. The point was he was some royalty that didnt get any authorization from anyone but his silverspoon upbringing elite. If you see my posts i have debated against some things that past posts did, like not educating people in africa on condom use to prevent hiv, and i have really ticked off some extremist catholics in the process . My main point was he was an elite and had no authority whatsoever to change the words of the bible to best serve him and his kings court. I had the argument about consom education with my brother years back when pope john paul was the pope. About a year ago the new pope issued a statement saying that its ok to promote condom education in africa on the basis that it was a compassionate thing to do and the lesser of 2 evils(the other evil being for them to catch aids and suffer). I have friends from all walks of life and my statement was never intended to make fun of anyone who is gay and i appologize for putting that statement in there. The fact that he was a king is what got me going. Sorry but i disagree , catholics were the first, but i do agree with you on why the protestants broke away from the catholic church as certain people in the church at the time were corrupt, and using indulgences to make profit among other things(as you pointed out), but that was no reason to completely break away from the foundational tenents, change the bible around and have your own beliefs. Like i said the catholic faith has one belief. There arent 40,000 different catholic churches. Just because certain powerful people inside the church abused the system to their own selfish wants and needs doesnt make the foundation of the catholic church wrong. This is why i wont accept anything that comes any human as complete law (unless it completely meshes with the laws of teh church and bible as handed down by jesus). Most extremists catholics dont think that way but like i have been saying most of my life im a moderate. The foundation of loving christ is how caring and compassionate your heart is with no hidden intentions in the way. The rest is just a journey Ill have to research that but i also heard that the catholics and orthodox were togetehr at one time. Good point
