Well, if you ask me, actually SMO will only work for some niches, very different with SEO, which you can work on almost all niches. For example, people in digg will love content related to Wii and technology but will they read something about health? Nope, you can consider yourself as a lucky man if you can get 10 natural diggs if your article/video is related to health. In Google, both Wii and health are popular, you know what I mean? I ever had a video in YouTube about soccer and I got 20,000 views in only 1 day. But let me ask you, do you ever see a medical-related video that get more than 10,000 views? (except if that video is featured on YouTube)?

SMO also has nothing to do with back links, maybe except if your niche is webmaster related or tech related (once again, this proves that SMO only works with some niches) where people can give you natural back links. SEO is more long term than SMO, i guess. I ever created a topic about Apple MacBook Pro and I submit the story to digg, SU, etc. I get 4,000 visitors from social media sites alone that day but when I "inactive" with my SMO, my traffic from SMO returned to almost zero. So you need to submit new story again and again to chase real visitors, i mean, they are not loyal visitors, they are loyal to those social media sites, not to your site. SMO works great if your site is about technology, entertainment, music, sports, games, hot girls, computers, and internet-related things. They give you plenty of traffic but a kind of traffic that do not convert. Maybe only around 1% conversion rate from around 20% CTR, this if your website is in a niche that people in social media sites like, other than that, your CTR will be less than 0.5% (ever tried to sell service or product in serious niches?). Meanwhile, SEO works great with almost all niches, you can expect for more than 33% CTR and more than 2% conversion rate. So yes, both are great marketing tool but SEO is still much better if your niche is not technology, sport, music, politic, or entertainment-related.

Why not do both or combine one to provide more punch to the other.
SEO will always have a ton of value and a great way to advance your sites traffic is to use SMO. I have to admit I get a lot of traffic from digg, stumbleupon etc.. BUT my conversions come from Google.... this is how I get paid so I will always focus a lot of attention on SEO.

Did you write that conversion rates suck from social media compared to search engines? (I didn't read it) But that is what I love about SEO, the high conversion rates.

This maybe true of sites like youtube. But digg & similar sites that don't implement the nofollow attribute are good links, and serve as good linkbait.

Social Media Optimiation should be part of your SEO efforts. It should be part of your strategy to optimize your articles and content with realated keywords to rank in the engines.

Hi guys thanks for taking your time to read our views of this - you have made very interesting comments but most of you do agree that both should be performed together and that is a good thing
