In your opinion, what is the best php editor? I've been using pspad but I don't like the way it automatically adds brackets, for example if I type ( it automatically adds the other ). I don't like that and I can't figure out how to make it stop. So what do you use and recommend?
^ There must be some way to disable your editor's syntax autocomplete, most editors (all that I've tried) do. Anyway, right now I'm sticking with jEdit. I like how you can add plugins to it and customize almost everything. Notepad++ is also a good editor. I've also tried EditPlus but I'm sticking with jEdit for now until I find a better one.
I use pspad, too, and dislike the auto brackets. You can turn that off under: |Program Settings|Editor(part 1) Uncheck Completion of chars ( { [ < " ' After writing opening character the program will automatically write closing, matching character. Brackets are completed when the character immediately after the opening bracket isn't word. Quotes are not completed if there is an alphanumeric character immediately before or after the quote.
I used Notepad and I was happy with it, till the UTF-8 revolution. Now I use Notepad++ and I'm happy with it.
I use Eclipse. My husband invested in the Zend program for work, and he loves it. It may be overkill for an average user, though, as he was just fine with Eclipse until he was running up in millions of lines of code for work.
Notepad++ is the best for me, using it for years... It's very light, the only flaw is that you must install plug in to use color picker... but it's not a big deal
Dreamweaver is my favorite mainly because I use it for so much other dev stuff. Other than that Zend Studio is a great program. It has great code hiding features, and is the best editor I've used for debugging.
Notepad++ would be the best choice. It has syntax highlighting to help you spot out your errors. It's also small but, very powerful! Notepad++ Site: http://notepad-plus.sourceforge.net/uk/site.htm - JTD
I use HTML-kit, but not the new one, as I'm not ready to fork out a big amount of money for an editor. I tried switching over to Notepad++ and discovering that it had the built-in FTP plugin, I nearly stuck with it. However, there were a few things that bugged me. It didn't highlight all of PHP's built-in functions so I never was completely sure I was doing something correctly. You also couldn't be connected to more than one site's FTP at the same time with the FTP plugin. I'm a big multi-tasker and I'm always connected to a bunch of FTPs at once. With HTML-Kit, it at least highlights everything and allows you to connect to every single FTP folder you have added at the same time. I'm always trying to look for another program to switch to though since HTML-Kit is a bit more big than I need it to be. It also allows for plugins and whatnot though. Would really like to try their newest version.. Site: http://www.chami.com/html-kit/
i use of am forced to use eclipse at work.. as i've been told it's a more professional tool.. though i also have that annoying automatic closing bracket with it.. i have to figure out a way to stop that. at home i use dreaweaver. it's light weight and gets the jobdone.
