How many Backlinks should an average site should have?

I mean, what's a good number of backlinks?

Also, does banners count as backlinks?

There's no limit, you have to do link building continuously. search engines sometimes drop old crap links and love new links. You can do directory submission, social bookmarking and anything to increase the backlinks.

 

Much depends on the subject of the site. Check out your major competitors, how many did they need to get on top?

If most sites on your subject have 100-200 links and you get a quick 1000, it's going to look a bit suspicious to the search engines.

 

my directory has 20,000 + backlinks and still not enough. I have small niche sites with 2 times the backlinks of competitors.

Link building must be done continually. If you lapse for a great length of time, your search engine rankings will drop.

 

It depends on your PR goals. If you're aiming for PR 5 or higher, you need every link you can get over time. However, a handful of links from GOOD QUALITY and RELATED websites can boost your PR in no time. It is difficult, even impossible, to state an exact number for backlinks an "average site should have". Just go ahead and look for related sites and try to get backlinks from them. Like what snowbird said, link building is a continual, tedious process and is probably the most time-consuming, frustrating element of SEO. Nevertheless, we need it to increase PR.

 

IMHO, I believe it does count. I understand that every link counts however little it helps, but there is something you got from it. Perhaps there is someone here who can correct my presumptions.

But, I have also read that it is better to have links from different IP addresses. 500 backlinks from same forum means the links come from same IP Address. I'm not so sure if these 500 backlinks are counted as 1 or is it counted as 500 individual pages. We need more help on that from experts around here in the forums.

As much as you are having more and more back links you will get good traffic through it.

 

Quantity is not the key here.You can get to PR2 with 1000 backlinks and even to PR5 with only a few dozen links .
