Before you complete your contractual agreement, make sure that you do your due diligence on the customer. Make sure he has a verified paypal account and is really the person behind the account and not someone who creates a fake account for this purpose. Since it is for a high ticket deal, it would help if you call the other party to confirm.

Firstly, PayPal is NEVER safe for a virtual item, there is at least 50% chance of losing your money. Website and domain sales should always be purchased via a bank transaction or cash, this is the only way you are certain of receiving the payment.

    Exactly.

Is the transaction amount large? The main concern when using Paypal is the ease of doing a chargeback with Paypal by the buyer. If possible, try to avoid Paypal. In my opinion, wire transfer is the safest way.

    Thanks.

Yes the amount is quite large!
If Paypal is the only option in this situation, how can I protect myself in case of a chargeback?
What sort of proof will Paypal consider in the worst case scenario-the buyer opening a dispute?
Will they consider emails or YM chat as a proof?
    Thanks,

Make sure you have all the necessary documentations such as Invoice, Delivery Order and Proof of Delivery (hopefully shipped via a courier service with online tracking).

Virtual items do not work well and there is no independent means of verifying the site was ever transferred.

Chargeback works with any payment processor as long as the credit card is being used since Chargeback are granted by the bank and Paypal or any payment processor would be almost powerless over it. They can dispute but they may not win.

I would think that eithe escrow or bank transfer would be the best means of protection for you but may not be favorable for the customer especially if they pay you and you do not fulfil your side of the contract.

NO. (In my opinion) If amount is large, use escrow.

If the amount is large consider using Escrow. PayPal really offers little protection. I bought a domain a few months back and we did the deal through the ScriptLance freelancing site.

I created a project for him to transfer the domain across to me and I deposited funds into his ScriptLance Escrow account from my credit card. Then when the domain was transferred I released the Escrow funds so he could withdraw them.

    well for your safety.
u can ask the buyer to open a dispute and close it again before you give him your site.
you will never get a charge back this way because dispute can be openned once.
otherwise exchange your paypal very fast after getting it.
    thanks
