I want to open my portfolio site next month (hopefully)

I cannot register with a .com domain cos apparently it's already registered :(
which can't be right cos I searched google and it's not there

    I was thinking of shadydesigns.org ?

Would like to know what you think?

as indicated before .org gives the user the feeling that this is an origination , might be a nonprofit.

Have you looked at other types of tlds, do you have a target region in mind? if so you might want to look at some other ccTLDs as there are many such as .us .in .cz etc..

if adding a letter such as e, i, my before your domain does not affect the sounding of the name I would go for it to, if it is available in .com or .net

you can see the appraisal value of it in this DP

btw, as long as is one word, dictionary and keyword. the extension can be consider by the buyer himself

    www.shadydesigns.co.uk

This is good. How about the expected visitors will come from?
If you target International client, .co.uk is not the best option for me as only the search engine for UK e.g : google.co.uk will be visible.

Hard to get into the first 10 in Google.com for the keyword as the competition is high among other domain..

    Just my 2.345 cents

    true
But I'll be advertising the site on forums etc

    I think I might go for www.shadydesigns.co.uk

it's the only good domain name available for 'shady designs'

I need to think it over

ShadyDesigns.co.uk or Shady-Designs.net is what I would choose. However, just an FYI, when I first see the word "shady" it sounds a bit scandalous or black marketish to me... Although I do agree it sounds cool too and it might fit your niche perfectly.

    yeah
another person said the same thing about "shady"
But, it's my nickname and what I'm known as.
    So, I dont see a problem ;)

Thanks for the hyphen suggestion. I never though of that.
    Thanks

I'm going to buy my domain & hosting next week. :D

For me the domain extension doesnt really matter. even how ugly the domain may look its how you handle and dedication to you website.

I have no problem with dot org domains, but you might want to pick up the co.uk one instead for your purposes.

I'm in a similar situation where "Slick" is my last name, but the word could be regarded in a similar way to "Shady." So far I haven't had any problems!

On a side note, have you contacted the dot com and dot net owners to see if they would be interested in selling the domain? You'll have to spend a little more, but it is really worth it if you are going to put a lot of time and effort into it.

    yeah
    I don't wanna use.biz anyway

It aint that important to have a .com domain
    If it's taken, it's taken.

    .co.uk IS good enough :)
