Do bold keywords help out your SEO?

I noticed that all the names of the celebrities and other keywords on PerezHilton.com were in bold letters. Is this for SEO purposes or is there another purpose for that?

It does help but make sure you don't make the page unreadable to users by making everything in sight bold!

I agree that making your keywords bold will help your SEO. However, you don't want to make every other word on your page bold.

Yes, it can help for SEO purposes. Special formats such as bold, italics, colors, etc. set specific content aside as more important than the rest. The use of these formats can help improve rankings of your website for specific phrases.

Are you talking about the anchor text in a backlink being bolded?

Heh, I have to disagree with everyone else here and say no, it does not help at all. Bloggers use bold text to draw the users eye to that particular word - in this case, a celebrities name which would make them want to read the article.

It does not help with your SERP and I do not know where you guys got that from. ;)

Yes bold definitely helps as well as italics and quotations as someone else said. Don't go crazy doing this to every keyword or you will get penalized.

As a general rule ( not always ) it's safe to emphasize one keyword or phrase every other paragraph.

So if I just bold certain words on a page, it will make them stand out more to google?

yep. bold will definitely help. it's like saying that the bolded words are important, thus helping SEs determine what the page is about.

Bold helps, but density should be less then 50% for your main keyword. Throw an underline in there as well, they help and are not as abused as bold text.

bold doesn't help, or the strong tag
If you wrap your links in a header tag, it Will help

    like
    <h2>link here</h2>

making them bold, italics, red, blue, underlined will make no difference at all

My friend I am working in this industry since 7 years so I stictly oppose that bold letters effect seo purpose. Yes bold letters definitely helps visitors to grab the attention of your site and this way your site may get traffic. Also visitors can wait long due to this techniques.

    Keep it in mind

Got to agree. Whether bold helps is highly dubious, I would say things that matter are header tags, but you also should remember to use such tools wisely and not to overoptimise page.
