How can they be different? My examples to what he did are both standing up for what they believe in. How are they different?

I am just standing up for the guy since everyone is so against him. There has to be one person willing to take a stand.

Acting like a lunatic does not help your cause. Rational people use rational arguments to support their view. He could have written a well reasoned letter. He could have started a petition.

Attempting to kill yourself is the ultimate way to demonstrate you don't have any real support for your view and that you should NOT be listened to.

I don't care how traumatic "Christmas" is for this asshole. Millions of people enjoy the season. We're not about to stop having Christmas because of one pyschotic Grinch.

He needs to find a better way to get the majority on his side.

I mean think about it. If you're the ONLY guy who cares so much and you kill yourself then why should anyone care? The one guy that didn't like what people were doing is dead so why should anyone change now?

Oh I dunno. Perhaps the subjugation of a nation is just a little bigger than this guy's offense to the word "christmas"

It's sad that you even need this explained to you.

You just made my point. He would not of gotten the media attention he would of got for setting himself on fire now would he? The more you say he is a lunatic you are just feeding the attention. That's how things like this work. You do something crazy and your on the news and cnn which cause's attention to your cause. You guys are just a part of the cycle.

How is that different? Your intelligence level must really give you a hard time. I suppose you can't see the big picture? You can't just a label on how meaningful something is for someone to stand up for. Your an idiot if you believe so. Standing up, is standing up is standing up. There is no value for what he stands for or what he believes. Just because it isn't a revolution doesn't make it not as valuable.

You know. You are right. Before he set himself on fire, I was totally for the holiday name change. After he did it. I was for the name change AND I wished i could bake marshmallows on his burning carcass. You raise a good point.

You are silly. and hard to believe you are being serious.

You think it a viable method of protest. Whenever someone wants something; he should light himself off like a roman candle? That's a helluva society.

This red light is 15 seconds too long. *lights myself on fire*
A stop sign has 8 sides, instead of 6. *lights myself on fire*

Hope you see how silly your point is.

Do we have to go over this again? Forget the fact he lite himself on fire, and focus on the point that he is allowed to stand up for he believes in and anything he does to show how serious he is or just to get media attention on the subject doesn't mean you can down right say what he did was wrong.

He is the only one that can decide if his cause was worth what he did. You can't dictate that.

Nope. As we've learned. The logical order of progression is:

    1-be upset about something
    2-light yourself on fire

There is no middle ground. Come on people. Don't you care enough about a word to immolate yourself?

Standing up for one's self, or principles is a good thing, however one must weigh the cost of the protest against the potential gain. This person may have decided that a line needed to be drawn in the sand, 'keep things from going to far', however I personally think that he (or she) was either grandstanding with a pyrotechnic light show, needs therapy, or both.

Yes, I am feeding into the media attention. However, negative attention to a cause is hardly productive. At this point you are basically the only one on this board arguing for the person, and just about everyone else is rolling their eyes and chalking up this incident as one more religion hating nut case.

Had he attempted to get a petition going, he actually could have used a low-media grass roots campaign to convince politicians that their decision was wrong. As it is, he's a lone nut case, they are likely to increase security in the school, and it is unlikely that if he DOES come up with a petition, that he will be able to get any volunteers to associate with it, or him. This particular effort of lighting himself on fire, which is the topic of the thread, was counter-productive.

alot of times I find foxnews skewed the story.... what was this man's true intentions? I know someone mentioned the monk who lit himself on fire in protest... perhaps this man was doing something similar

I support anyone who lights them self on fire as long as others around them are not hurt. Whether its with or without flame retardant - if thats how they want to be heard and to decrease the surplus population - more power to them.
