vBulletin if you have an extra 160 $ or so lying around.

I have used phpBB and currently use SMF, SMF is much better, atleast in terms of spam. I used to get a crap load of spam on phpBB.

Yep it is value if you can afford for startup ... if not then start with mybb(similar to vb in built) and then move to vb when you got the turnaround!!

My vote is for Vbulletin, even if it costs money, it is by far the best forum platform. phpbb3 and SMF would be a tie for my 2nd position.

vB is the best, big price tag on it too.

I like SMF a lot as well for a free forum software.

i've tried phpbb2 and smf.... SMF is much better, imo, for the following reasons
    1) no spam (my bb2 board was spammed constanlty)
    2) SMF has an easy to use SSI that lets you put recent posts, topics etc.. on ANY page on your site..this latter reason lead to many many more people joining my forum.

The price tag is worth it considering the number of mods you need to do to get a typical free forum to act the same way as VBulletin does.

vBulletin! It's worth those 160 bucks you spend on it.

And with the coming of 3.7, it's even better. :)
