Angelina Jolie says the US Troop Surge in Iraq is Working

Actress and humanitarian activist Angelina Jolie said Thursday that the reinforcement of U.S. troops in Iraq has created an opportunity for humanitarian programs to boost assistance for Iraqi refugees.

Addressing the question of whether the "troop surge" has worked, Jolie said that "I can only state what I witnessed."

"When I asked the troops if they wanted to go home as soon as possible, they said that they miss home but feel invested in Iraq," she wrote. "They have lost many friends and want to be a part of the humanitarian progress they now feel is possible."

Coming from recognized defense expert Angelina Jolie, I find that very important information. When will Jane Fonda be reporting in?

In related news, Steve Martin says the opium trade in Afghanistan has died down, and The Price is Right host Drew Carey thinks flouride is safe in drinking water....

She has chosen to adopt half the refugees whom she spoke with on her last visit.

Angelina Jolie works on behalf of the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees and was in Iraq to see first hand that the surge is working. Ronald Regean and Arnold Schwarzenegger were actors.

And she is not an actor/tress??? The U.N. High Commissioner could appoint me, too, and that would not add one ounce of defense expertise to me.

P.S. Don't misread me here — I too believe the surge is working, but not because Angelina says so.

Its pretty obvious she was there not to review the defensive strategy, but to observe the effects on the soldiers and the citizens of iraq.

Anyone who thinks the surge is working is nuts.

What is working, is the ceasefire with Al Sadr, paying the Awakening a daily wage not to fight, and the withdrawal of British troops from the south.

If you're buying the "surge" propaganda, find some better news sources. You're terrible misinformed.

Im not buying this surge propaganda, I never did state that. I stated that I highly doubt anyone was taking angelina as a defensive expert and merely as a person observing the effects.

Al Sadr last time I checked is a Shiite, yet is also some what peaceful in the Sunni areas as well. Where Al Sadr cease file doesn't apply.

    .... that make no sense...

I am not expressing my views on the surge at all.... I'm merely looking at this logically. Where does the article say angelina jolie is giving her expert advice on how the surge is actively stopping the insurgents. She is giving her opinion based on what she saw, she's not trying to be some sort of military expert...

No because he has his eyes open. The surge is working only because of the deals we have with the iranians. I wonder what we gave them in return:(. No matter how many troops we have there, if iranian intelligence wants to hike up violence there, they can do it. This was a lie of a war and we need our troops home. Everyone knows that jolie isnt going to say anything else but " the surge appears to be working". Are you kidding me?
Do you really think the admin and the military will want her to say otherwise?

She is not a military expert so we cann't accept her statement totally. So we have to make our views on the basis of the views of military experts.

You missed the part I wrote about the "Awakening"

The surge was supposed to allow for the Iraqi government to get stability and start taking control, so we could draw down troops BELOW pre-Surge levels.

In this regard, the surge has been a failure, because we're now looking, at a best case scenario of drawing down to pre-surge levels.

Not to mention that the Iraqi government has made little headway, the Coalition of the Billing has started to dry up, and we're now paying our enemies not to fight us or each other.

Would I like the surge to "work"? Sure. I'd love to see troops drawn down and the Iraqis take over their own internal security. But it isn't happening, and following any credible international news service will yield the same opinion.
