People generally say the ideal or using your own word decent CTR is 2%. But it is better to have a CTR of 5%. That is considered as good one, especially when your page views are less. Less number of ads, better placement of ads and suitable blending all will help to increase the CTR.

When you say less number of ads, how many do you reckon would be optimal?

that entirely depends on your niche. some niche will not even give you 2% CTR no matter much much you try. and some niche might give you 10, 20, or even 30% CTR. again, entirely depends on niche and ad placement/blending in

Tips on increasing your adsense CTR:

All webmasters who use Adsense aim to increase their click-through ratio (CTR) to generate higher revenues. But how would you go about increasing your CRT to double digit, when you've been struggling with those low percentages so far? Here are some tips to help you maximize your CTR:

Go easy on click Do not offer your visitors too many options to click or leave your website. If you are promoting affiliate programs, banner ads and subscription sign-ups on the same page, chances are your visitors will be less enclined to click on those Adsense ads. Keep clutter to a minimum and your pages simple with a minimum of "click" options.

Tweak the color palette Experiment with different colors to see what works best. Generally, colors that blend in well with your website design have a better chance of getting your ads clicked as they seamlessly integrate into the copy.

Experiment and then experiment some more I can't stress this point enough. The secret, if there was any, to Adsense success is in experimenting with your copy, ad formats, design and any other factors you might think of. Simply apply a few changes, see what happens and keep those changes that boost your CRT. Overtime, you can optimize to CRT to double digits and you will be on your way to making a decent amount off your Adsense ads.

It depends on your traffic levels but 5% is pretty good.
If you have a lot of returning visitors it may decrease.

    Yes Forum have low CTRs...
I am getting about 2.97% CTR from a blog
Adsense with search via Google Coop is also not too bad; I'm getting about 5% on that

CTR depends on the niche. I have sites that get 1-2% as well as sites that consistently get around 30%. Overall my average for all sites is right around 8-9%

Its not a constant thing.. may be 2% is ok with some publishers and may be 10% is not sufficient for some.
