Confusing Google PR Scenario

I have several websites, some of which recently received a PageRank. However, something about the most recent ranking doesn't make much sense. Here is the information on the websites.

    http://www.shuttercontractor.com/

Online since: September 5, 2007 (a relaunch - the site was first online in December, 2002 but was offline for about 11 months)
    Inbound Links in Yahoo: 11,906
    Inbound Links in Google: 204
    Avg Unique Daily Visits: 235
    Pages in Google Index: 100

    Current PR: 2

    http://www.house-shutters.net/

    Online since: November 25, 2007
    Inbound Links in Yahoo: 48
    Inbound Links in Google: 13
    Avg Unique Daily Visits: 4.6
    Pages in Google Index: 152

    Current PR: 3

Why would http://www.house-shutters.net/ have a higher PR than http://www.shuttercontractor.com/?? ShutterContractor.com has been online longer, has much more traffic, many more inbound links (and a larger percentage of targeted links). Sure there is more content, but I thought PR was based primarily on link popularity and traffic...?

    Any theories?

Yup pr is just based on link popularity, i wouldnt worry about ur sites, i have a site that has 100s of google links and its pr0, and my other sites all have far less links and have pr work that out lol, i have given up worrying about pr, it will only give you headache lol, i admit its somewhat confusing maybe in time it will work itself out, sorry i cant give you a straight answer !

probably sites with different language won't effect each other PR.

PR is only the parameter to measure the relevancy of the page and how many sites link back. So a domain age is not so relevant when measuring the PR for Big G. You might need to check with the PR of the sites that link back.

Actually, the PR of the many of the sites of the nearly 12,000 links to ShutterContractor.com range from PR0 - PR8. There are some PR0, but they are a very small percentage of the total number.

Mose of the backlinks for House-Shutters.net are on other sites that I own and only 1 of them has a PR as of yet (and it is only a PR1).

It just drives me nuts that on one site I am working like crazy to get links and another that I am not doing very much with gets a higher page rank.

Nightowl, that site is only just over 4 months old and in link:http on google, the .net site
has only 2 links , one of which is a really basic html homepage.

I would only guess you must be in the sandbox or that this was some sorta 302 hijacking?! lol

You might as well start getting every website that is about houses, and construction to start linking back to you now. Most of the time PR 2 sites will link to you believing that your PR 3 will help their rank.
You might want to do that now.. before your PR drops off to 0 and you leave the sandbox starter phase.
Because I dont see the Google logarithm in your 4 month old site anywhere , so that cant be whats giving it a PR3
If its still like that in another 6 months to a year ..that would be interesting - Im gonna watch it now :) lol

Now that i look at your site a little more ..
I dont find anything unusual as far as high backlinks or scripts.
I see youre using quantify to profile visitors, and some various google branding and 'Add this' bars
Other than that , it doesnt appear at a second glance that anything unusual - without going full deep into it to check and scour it lol
its registered with godaddy and through a proxy domain company to make personal info confidential.

None of that is anything different than what many other sites have.

    So i reached a conclusion!
I think your site is ranking high PR 3 with virtually no backlinks, especially since most of those ArticleClick articles seem to have even been indexed to your backlinks yet.

Conclusion: Your site is about shutters.
Every single anchor text link on your site has the word shutters in it - and points to a page relevant to some type of shutters.
This site doesn't appear to sell a variety of products - unless considering the framed ebay display.
This site is new and probably in a start off sandbox area with the usual high rating which decreases over time.
Google sees your site as an information-based sites 100% about shutters - which is also in the URL - every single link - and all of those articles.

You may not actually lose ground on that site - its about shutters, and everything on it is about shutters. To google it looks like a shutters information (not ecommerce) site.

This may be the new Google strategy being demonstrated. No backlinks , extremely new site. High PR for a new site 4 months old.

Keep your eye on it for a year - if it stays or gets higher as he adds more articles. Then this site could end up being a perfect example and model for the new Google strategy without buttloads of backlinks.

Very interesting - thanks for showing this! :)

    P.S.
If this site stays high in PR for at least a year - You might want to add rel="nofollow" to any links on your site that point to other sites. That way none of your PR juice runs out to them. Think of PR like a water tank..and links are pipes going out to other sites.
also I wouldnt accept links from any other sites EXCEPT specificaly about shutters.
When all of that is done - point that site to your homepage of your commerce shutters site. to give it the highest possible PR boost.

For next 6 months to year - I would only continue adding 'shutter' based articles and links - keep doin what you were doing.
Keep everything within that 'shutters' theme. and watch it for 6 months to a year.
dont taint it with anything that isnt about shutters.
If this works - you could be the guy thats says = "My site was one of the first to clearly demonstrate the new Google PR strategy!"
which that alone, could get you a buttload of backlinks in the future of SEO referring to it in blogs etc.
    Who knows.

Easy, because in January PR update, not all websites get the PR update. I have a PR 3 website, online since June 2007. Since January, I got the first spot in my targeted keyword. My PR stays 3 since October but during that PR update, my SERPs were much worse.

For comparison, i have a second site which online since November 2007 but get PR 4 in January update. But my SERPs are much worse, what's the answer for this? Because Google didn't update all PR during the January update. Anyway, PR is not everything. Link relevancy, anchor text, etc. are the most important.

And about Google wants new algorithm without back links, I don't think they are there yet. Without back links policy, SEs are easier to be manipulated, we have seen this a long time ago. There will be more spam sites which only try to do onpage optimization without giving any value to their visitors and la viola, they are on the first position. I don't think Google wants this, that's why they have back links policy

This type of scenario commonly occurs...
PR tends to increase or decrease depending on link factors...
Maybe those site that linked to your site have also experienced decrease in PR, which causes negative effect to yours...
Unlike the newer one where most of its incoming links have PR increase, which brings positive impact to your PR...

Hmm...I have read about the PR "leak" theory, but after some experimentation I don't put a lot of faith into it. If it were true, then why does DMOZ have a PR8? It is a directory that contains nothing but outbound links.

The same scenario applies here - every article has 2 links at the bottom - one to the author's site and another to the article site. I am pretty sure the PR "leak" theory was something that was conceived of to scare webmasters into buying oneway links instead of link exchanging for free.

Unfortunately I can't remove or put rel="nofollow" on those links because it is a violation of the copyright and article site TOS to do so. Each of those articles is free to use as long as I keep the links the way they are. There wouldn't be much content at all if it weren't for those articles, so I wouldn't want to bite the hand that feeds me. :)

Also, there are hyperlinks to my e-commerce site all over House-Shutters.net - there are banner ads in rotation with Google and Ebay ads for the site + there are hyperlinks in the text in several articles and categories.

Well, unfortunately if I keep adding 2 articles per week like I am doing now, the well of free articles about shutters will dry up long before the year is up. I can easily find articles that are in the neighborhood though - articles about siding, curb appeal, real estate staging, installing new windows, curtains, drapes, blinds, etc. I am actually more interested in targeting the kind of people we want on our ecommerce site than with keeping the theme strictly about shutters. People who are searching for shutters will likely find our ecommerce site, but people who are searching for information about their home improvment project might be convinced (or reminded) to buy shutters to finish their job just because the article they found is on a site called House-Shutters.net.

I don't know if NightOwl888 is still following this thread, but I noticed his/her site is now a PR1. I'm fairly new to this, but what I found most amazing is that this site ranks No. 1 in MSN and Yahoo for his main keyword, which is the URL. But in Google, I didn't find the site until No. 300. Did I miss something, and is this possible?

thanx in advance for any reponse.

In simple words - Its all about quality links!

Conduct his test please. Type "logo design" in Google and analyze top 3 websites on same basis. You will find that RANKING is not directly proportional visible GREEN page rank. Again and again, the green PR is always old until Google exports their secret PR data to our toolbars.

Your site with top ranking and conversions is the real KING!

PR doesn't 'leak' like this - but in general the more outgoing links you have, the 'weaker' the authority you pass down the line (matt cutts has said a bit about this but can't find the quote at the moment). so the nofollow attribute is best use in PR sculpting for your own site to give certain pages more 'authority' (by reducing the 'authority' sent elsewhere)
